Is this the infamous "PING"?

I've seen discussions about a "PING" related to exhaust and a "PING" related to octane.

I have a tuner and I can change the octane settings if needed.

I've never heard that 'chirp' before. Hope someone else has an idea.

Sounds like what I hear when I run my AC.

Sounds like what I hear when I run my AC. Once every minute or so? Is your AC on when you hear this?

Yep, sounds like the A/C compressor clutch disengaging/engaging to me. Note the change in RPMs right at the click/chirp. It goes from 1,800 RPMs to 2,100 RPMs so it appears that the A/C disengages and takes the load off the engine. I'd be interested in other theories. Unless you had your foot on the gas at the time, that idle is set pretty high. At start up, mine idles initially at around 1,200 RPMs, then drops down to 700-750 as it warms up.

It definitely is not exhaust PING or octane PING.

Exhaust PING is normally heard after shutting the car off after the exhaust system is hot. As the tips cool, you can hear a very definite metallic high-pitched PING. This is just the contraction of the metal.

Engine Octane PING is really more of a "rattle" IMHO. It typically occurs under load/acceleration and sounds like a bunch of marbles being shaken very quickly inside a soup can.

It's just the a/c compressor.

A/C compressor cycle. You can watch the clutch engage and disengage to confirm.

A "ping" will sound like a bunch of marbles rattling around in a tin can.

Ping = Death to an aluminum motor.

Yup. Ping = Harmonics = oil pump failure = BOOM!

Thanks for the imput gang. Sounds like we can call this something other than a "PING". It's more like a chirp. I will test to see if this is AC related.

I did have the foot on the gas because the chrip wouldn't happen at low RPMS and I wanted to make it chirp for the video.

Thanks again.

The compressor doesn't chirp at lower rpm's because there is less force on the clutch when it engages. If the comp. consistently cycles on and off, check your a/c charge, it may be low.

Mine does it. Ford tech told me chirp is the a/c engaging. Chirp is coming from belt/pulley. Nothing tonworry about.

I agree A/C compressor is cycling.

Here in Hawaii with the shi :censor: tty gas my Rauder sometimes will ping with the slightest pressing of the gas pedal while going up a slight upgrade/hill.

I think that I would switch to a different gas station. It shouldn't be doing that ^^^^^^^ if you are running 91 or 93. Why would gas in Hawaii be different?

Silly! Ping=too advanced ignition or low octane gas=air/fuel lit too early=main explosion in cylinder before TDC=pressure pushing out while piston going up=shattered hypereutectic piston ring lands ;)

Dude, there's nothing wrong with it.:)
