Are they attached it some way to the bottom of the cupholder, like glued to the console, or are they just sitting in the bottom?

Cupholders have got to be one of the WORST parts of the interior to clean. It's almost a guarantee that if they see use, they will get filthy, and it's nearly impossible to have an easy cleaning solution for them. That rubber didn't help the process, to the best of my memory... :(

But with my luck Ill scratch the console trying to pop them out and I'll never be able to live with myself after that.

Just rip them up. It looked like there was a piece of two way tape in a 1" by 1" square. They will sit just fine with out the glue/tape. Makes it a lot easier to clean with them out.

Call Obama.

It is kind of sexist that only the women get free contraception.

Remove it and wash it out in the kitchen sink.
It's pretty easy to pull out that part of the console, no tools required. First drop the gauge cluster and place to one side, then starting nearest the front of the car, lift up the large plastic piece that covers most of the console. It unclips in a few places, and requires just a big of wiggling to free it from the area of the console latch.

Last time I did it, I was at the laundromat/car wash I go to. After that, I folded up some paper towel from a restaurant and put that in the cupholder bottoms.

That's my motto as well, but after 3+ years of non use a small enough amount of dust made it in my crack to bother me. ;)
