Does anyone know what the color bands on the driveshaft mean?
Not real important just curious.

Is it correct that both the MM and the CVPI share the same type drive shaft?
Merrill

Thanks for the info, the above link was helpful.
From what I see, although the MM and CVPI shafts will interchange, the
CVPI shaft is a metal matrix composite good to 150 mph which means it
actually is better than what came in the MM.

03-18-2012, 03:16 PM
^^^ That is true but the CVPIs only got the MMX driveshaft for a year or two. The rest of the CVPIs got the regular aluminum driveshaft which IIRC is the same as MM.
I want to say '99-'01 CVPIs got the MMX driveshaft, sometime around then.
If you go to CVN they will know for sure.

Same size and design, but all are not the same material. Some of the CVPIs were fitted with metal matrix driveshafts, which were service rated for higher speeds, these are superior to the OEM Marauder units if you're going to run at higher speeds, or with 4.10 gears (based on some folk's recommendations).

I just put one in my car from a 2000 CVPI. There are no colored bands on the new one like the Marauder driveshaft. The driveshaft did have "POLICE" spray painted on it. It also doesn't have the harmonic balancer on the yoke like the Marauder driveshaft. And it's way lighter. I was also wondering what the colored bands meant.

I picked one up yesterday from a 2000 cvpi has the green and pink band, has the word POLICE stamped in it and no dampner. Looks like a cheap upgrade.

Sadly when I had mine cleaned and inspected the color bands washed off but I think I got mine for $175. It did not need to be balanced or new hardware and the DS shop that checked it out and said it's rare to find a used DS in such good shape. Mine is a late 99 - early 2000 MMX.

Hope this helps. I bought a NOS MMX police driveshaft in 2003 when I got my MM. My friend who works at a Ford parts dept located it in CA. I just looked under the car and the striping colors from front to back look to be (faded now) White/Green/Green. I think the first color is going to actually be Pink. The stock MM driveshaft (in the NOS box) has Pink/Green/Blue stripes.
The MMX was only in 1999-2000 in CVPI with 3:55 gears. The 3:23 rear cars got a standard police shaft.
My shaft says in 3/16" tall letters (very small) "MMX - POLICE" up near the yoke end running around the shaft, not across it.
I found a similar MMX in a wrecking yard that was marked the same way.
The ones with the big POLICE letters may not be MMX. The MMX's are usually marked.

Ok, what have I found? From front to back, no damper, pink/green/white stripes. It's in an 03 P71. It was a PI. If it's not an MMX, is it better then the stock MM drive shaft I have now? Is it worth upgrading to this shaft?
I went a head and bought the driveshaft. It does have police painted on it, and a sticker with a bar code [02M1019666] is on the sticker. It does not have MMX on it anywhere. What do I have, the real deal, or your everyday PI shaft?
Merrill
03-30-2012, 07:08 AM
Yes, it is not completely clear how many years the MMX driveshaft was used,
I think you got the real deal. It should have POLICE stamped in it too.
Anything after 99 with the color bands you have and stamp is a safe bet.

This is what the one I buy Friday looks like. Mine has a pink/green/white strip, and a sticker with a bar code. The #02M1019666 is on the sticker, and the sticker covers about half the police that was painted on it. There are no other marks on it. Did I score or strike out on this?

Mine has a pink / green/ blue stripe. About 6 to 8 inches from the plate that mounts to the rear is a brown lettering band that says police, MMC, and build date of 10 /09. That MMC stands for Metal Matrix Composite. Wikipedia says they were used from 97 to 05 for what it's worth.

That's kinda what the dealer told me today. They where made from 98 to 04. He showed 2 shafts for 03 CVPI's steel and MMX. He said the MMX is not available any more. But when it was it was $1700. I payed $32.02 for mine, I might need to go back and kiss the junk yard owner. Or maybe cuddle a little before I left.

With as many CVPI that are going through salvage yards I plan on picking up a couple to pass on to members. The one I got at pick and pull was 22.66

My understanding is CVPI cars used both alumimnum and MMX driveshafts.
