View Full Version : Changing 3" fuel filter

So I upgraded mine with MuscleMerc's 3" fuel filter kit the other year ago. I thought the filter was the FG800A which is what I used before... nope, different filter. So I said screw it and put the MuscleMerc fuel filter back on until I can figure out what it is and now the clamps for the input side of the filter are tighten all the way and I can see spin the hose and even pulled the hose he supplied off with the clamps down all the way. Anyone else had this problem before and know the part number for the filter he used? I'm going to have to try and do something to the clamps to get them to tighten down more or I'm SOOL and stuck at work for the night.

His kit comes with 2" fuel injector hose clamps per connection, I'm just going to take two off and then move one over that I know is good to the side I'm having a problem with. Hopefully that will work and I can run to the parts store and get some more. I'll pull the filter out again and write down the numbers from it.

I'd try some new pieces of hose, since they probably shrunk a bit. I doubt the fuel filter input port/tube shrank. or some different clamps.

Well it's def the hose I believe. I moved around the clamps, still the same result, also tried the FG800A filter and it slides right off.

I thought someone once told me the filter is from a Ford Ranger?

That's kind of what I was thinking as well.
Anyone know if I can use a regular hose clamp just to limp the car home?

Coming in late here, but mine looks a lot like his and I believe I got mine from a 2005 E250 5.4. I definately remember it being an '05 Ford fullsize truck or van. They seemed to have different sizes for every engine. Also One of my clamps was bad from the start and I only used one. That was over a year ago and no issues. Of course I flared the ends of the filter slightly though.

Of course at the auto parts store they only had fuel injector hose but lists as "Not Recommended For Fuel Injected Engines". I grab the hose, a double flaring tool set and a bunch of FI hose clamps.
Wouldn't you know... the 1/2"-9/16" clamps fixed the problem.
The clamps that Travis supplied with his kit have to be tightened all the way down to make a secure connection. I am guess they are one size up from the 1/2"-9/16" clamps which I got and still had 1/4 left to be tightened but there was no need, I couldn't yank the hose off and everything is nice and tight now.
I will be buying some more AutoCraft p/n AC52F15V 4pack of 1/2"-9/16" clamps and some new Gates hose since I have the Goodyear that Travis originally started his kits with.

Did a cross reference on the fuel filter number that was on the filter and comes up as a
Az Filters p/n FF745 (sold at AutoZone)
Champ Labs p/n G6367 (sold on Amazon.com)
Did you get everything straightened out?

Yeah just re-used the same hose but used found some new smaller fuel injector hose clamps and was able to get a tighter seal on the filter.

Ive been curious, what advantage do you get from running the larger Fuel Filter?
Thanks.

Since installing this upgraded filter and lines from Musclemerc, how may times has your check engine light illuminated and throwing a code for fuel filter?
I want to do this mod but I don't like the fact of check engine light coming "on" and having to clear it out.
Maybe once a year wouldn't be that bad if the light came on.

I did the mod last summer and the only time the light came on was on initial start up after completing the installation. Cleared it and all has been good.

Great!!! I always wanted to upgrade and do this mod but was hesitant.
I now will include in my purchase the fuel filter mod kit with bumper sag fix from Musclemerc in the next few weeks.

If the code is P0190 all it means is that the fuel rail pressure sensor saw a greater value than what is listed as max in the tune. As many have said it's like a badge of honor for NA cars. I think it has popped the code 4 times and each time I just cleared the code with my scangaugeII unit and went on my way.
First time it happened was the very first WOT run I did after installing the filter and lines. 2nd time was a really cold winter morning, 3rd was after I took the battery terminals off and went WOT for the first time and last night after I had the filter off for several hours while trying to fix things, next time I went WOT it tripped the code. When the code comes up it does not change how the car runs or acts, it's just to let you know hey you have high fuel pressure.

I always wanted to upgrade and do this mod but was hesitant. Having a CEL after a fuel filter change is not uncommon. Cycle the key on and off a few times after changing the filter before actually starting the motor.

Thanks "Birdman"!!!!
Great info/notes and you've got a good memory.
I can live with the light "on" and clear it out if my car behaves the same way as yours and "guspech750" after your installs.
Aloha.

Will keep this in mind and perform after the install.
Thank you!!!
