Cam bolt removal from loose cam

Ok, I'm in the middle of installing 98 cobra cams into my engine and can't break the cam bolt loose on the 98 cobra cam. I'm referring to the specific bolt in the pic:

Any tips/tricks/suggestions without scarring the cam?

Figured out a ghetto fabulous way and worked perfect. Will update once cam is installed.

Hold the sprocket. Use an old chain in a vise. You are changing your chains, sprockets and tensioners right???

That's actually a good idea re sprocket and old chain.

What I did was insert a 3/8ths extension into the bottom of the cam...inserted it onto an old ratchet that I attached to a vise and impacted the cam bolt. Worked great. See pics of what I'm talking about:

No cam lock tool yet. Ordering the ford cam timing kit, which I believe has te lock tool. Before I order, just analyzing all the tools involved and visualizing the degreeing process so understand what and why I'm doing each part of the process. Btw, thanks for great info in the pm's!

Yeah, no problem.

With the cam lock tool, you'll be able to lock the cams to remove the bolts.
Good thinking on putting something in the D-slots in the back of the stock cams.

If you need any more help just let me know.
It's pretty intimidating the first time, but once you do it a couple of times it gets easier..lol.

going to attempt to see where I am at withthe stock gears. if not where I like them, either grind the keyway or order the adjustable gears.

Do it right. Get the Cloyes gears. If you're way off, you can get four of them to give you 8 degrees total for the intakes. Did you get the 12mm Cobra cam bolts with the cams? I upgraded to the ARP for the halibut...

i hope your not using the torque wrench you put in a vise and hit with an impact gun to torque your bearing caps... because its most likely ruined and terribly inaccurate now.

other than that, looks good, hoping to do this modification myself in the future

Really? It seemed to work just fine after....

Just kidding. That torque wrench has been long dead, which is why I used it. Breaker bar would be best but didn't have a 3/8ths inch handy.

For torquing bolts, I actually use an old school wrench with the needle. Never had a problem with that.

Did have the 12mm bolts, lucky for me. Actually, the cams (both intake and exhaust) came with all the original timing gears and chains also. I'm not gonna use the exhaust cams as they are effectively the same as our stock exhaust cams.

Need to look into the cloytes gears.....
