View Full Version : In Car CD Player

I just had my car in for service on an unrelated matter and when I got it back, the CD player inside of the car kicks out any disc I put in with the read out, "Bad Disc."

I know they checked the battery for me, but I wouldn't think that this could have done anything to damage the CD player. The 6 disc changer in the trunk is working properly and the stereo is OK as well, so I know it can't be the music I listen to in spite of what my wife thinks.

Has anyone experienced this problem and is there a simple fix I can do instead of bringing it back to these guys?

Regards.

Have you tried a CD cleaner disk?

Are you inserting the disk the right way? Label side should be face up. I fought with mine for about 10 mins with a custom burned disk until I realized it was upside down. Also, are you putting a disk in that came from a warm place (assuming the cabin of the car is cold)? This can cause fogging of the disk and make it not able to read. Do you hear anything when you put the disk in? Like a tick tick tick tick...? If you do, the eye might be having a hard time focusing and need re-adjusting or replacement.

^^^ what LML said ^^^

Also, if it's cool outside where you are, bringing the car into a warm shop can cause condensation on the lens of the laser too.

If your dashboard has (or did have) condensation on it, it may take a little while to evaporate.

I've had the "Bad Disc" display occur several times in my MM & in wife's car.
Both the trunk & the dash units.
The "Bad Disc" display mysteriously disappeared after CDs were inserted with the proper side Correctly Oriented...
Usually, blame for such aberrations is directed at others... however, I do get Busted...occasionally...must be my poor eyesight !
If this resolves the problem, be sure to let your wife know...

No, my eyesight is perfect, albeit surgically enhanced. The disc is in properly. In fact, I never took the disc out from when I dropped it off, so that wouldn't be the problem.

I also tried a number of discs (also all inserted properly.) The condensation on the lens on the inside may be something to consider, but not something that I could do myself. Looks like another trip back to the dealer then.

I would still try a cleaning disc before taking it back.

I don't know about that. CD cleaning disks are abrasive and can damage the read head.

Try warming it up with a hair dryer. :fire:
