I was wondering what type of oil to use. I have been using Royal Purple 5w20 and Lucas synthetic oil treatment. Royal is really high now. Just want some of your thoughts

Royal or Amsoil. Even at $8 a quart for Royal - it's still cheaper than filling the tank with premium. My position: don't skimp on oil.

Royal is $10 per qt in the Cicago area and I have been looking online

Royal Purple caused oil leaks for me. Switched back to regular oil and no more oil leaks.

I've topped off with high mileage Valvoline NextGen 5W20 with no ill effects.

Any thoughts on the NextGen?

I heard the term "snake oil" and that's what I think of "high mileage" oil. What I learned as a kid was to change your oil, air and fuel filters and go for it.

I only use Moble 1 and have since it came in silver metal cans. I have never seen full synthetic from Ford, only blend. If it exists I might use if I knew Ford part number or store chain that sells it.

Motorcraft 5-30 semi-synth is the only thing I put in my newer Fords along with the appropriate Motorcraft filter.

I just checked the owners manual and it says 5w20
So you guys using 5w30...obviously using 5w30 make no difference???

If you are in a climate where it does not get to hot or cold, 5w30 will not hurt is what I have been told,
I had a 77 Buick Regal with 350 in it and after I hit 50k it would knock unless I used straight 30
That always puzzled me

Been running Mobile 1 0w30 and Motorcraft FL820S.

I take it you have someone change your oil, cause around here Motorcraft oil goes for $5 per Qt. Filter ~$4

I just use motorcraft oil and filter...

$50 bucks for my oil change...

I use the OEM Motorcraft and have had a number of oil analysis done. It is a lot of valuable info for the buck.
It is best to have more than one done and at a different times.

My last oil change was Next Gen Valvoline 0-20W with a microguard filter .
The total after tax was 27 dollars and some pennies.
I get a 20 dollar gift card back as a rebate, so the total cost was seven dollars and some pennies.:D
My last full synthetic change was 2.99 a quart and a Puralator premium filter for A TOTAL cost of twentytwo bucks.
Oh and I have eight years & 120K of brutalized miles, I do change it 2-3k DINO OIL, 4-6 k ON FULL SYN.

The modular engine was designed to use 5-30, for CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reasons they switched most of their engines to 5-20, after confirming that the majority of those engines would last a minimum of 100K (compared to the previous standard of 150K). So unless you are concerned about a minimal MPG gain, in which case you shouldn't be driving a Marauder, a x-30 is the best choice.

To answer the OP's question, there IS no "best" oil. You can use RP, Red Line, Rennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge, Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Valvoline Synpower. Your motor will NOT know the difference. You can also use good ol' Motorcraft 5W-20. Same answer.

I would skip the Lucas Oil Treatment, though. It's worthless in an engine that's mechanically sound.

Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft filter. Every 5K miles.I've done 52 of these so far, raced the car 600 or so times, and in general, beat the snot out of it with no oil related issues. I think the Ford engine engineers kind of knew what they meant when they wrote it into the owners manual.

The oil analyisis reports I have back up what Paul is saying.

Any quality oil that meets the OEM specs. The key is changing the oil/filter. How often can only be determined by having several oil analysis done.

Every 3K of 3 months with an OEM spec oil and quality filter will probably be more than enough for the 99.99% of MM's.

Some w/ OEM spec oil can go 4,000 or 4,500 or 5,000 or 6,000 or 7,500 miles depending on mods, use and geography with the same benefit as every 3,000.

I think the Ford engine engineers kind of knew what they meant when they wrote it into the owners manual.

The Ford engine engineers wanted 5W-30:

I spent about 10 years doing engine development with Ford Motor Company, including being the systems engineer on the 2003 Aviator and 2005 Mustang V8s?

5W-30 is probably a good oil for the street with mixed temperatures, yes.

I think you'll understand that I can go into details here. And understand that I'm not saying that 5W-20 is not going to instantly do damage. But suffice it to say I've seen and been involved in a LOT of development on these motors, and my personal opinion is that I would never run 5W-20 in a modular motor. Regarding your "spec oil" comment, you need to look at what else governs this recommendation.

I would not run 5W-20 in ANY stock mod motor. This is especially true in 4v motors, but applies to all of them in one form or another. I've seen the dyno testing. I've probably looked at several hundred engines disassembled and spread out on inspection tables. And I've been involved in testing to resolve issues where varying the oil viscosity was part of the test DOE. Trading a very small FE improvement in exchange for a large durability safety margin is not something I'm interested in doing.
