I bought my daughter the 96 SS and have driven it alot. I like the feel of the steering on the MM much more. In a ramp parking garage the SS front end squeeled and felt like it was jumping in the tite turns. I live in Miami and the climate control of the MM is necessary for me. In total pleasure the MM is the better car.

Well, as I see it we SS & MM owners have more in common than we have differences. We both enjoy/demand a REAL car with a REAL engine. Many of us are big/tall/wide guys that can't/won't deal with the nonsense of having to use vaseline to get into our cars. I would have purchased an SS if they were still selling them NEW. CHEVY DID YOU HEAR THAT YOU STUBBORN COMPANY!!!? C.A.F.E. is a big deal for the manufacturers, but I believe they could do more with their motors to get better MPG figures so they could continue to make cars people actually LIKE to drive.
I even like my parents Lexus, just not enough to sign my name to a second mortgage, I mean really now...48 grand?????!!!!
Anyway, there will always be plenty of common ground between the SS/MM owners. I would rather spend time with people I share likes/dislikes with than become over-competitive and click-y.
We are driving what just very well amount to the last of the big-iron.

Hey there, guys. Long time no post. Like many other people, i love competition. Absolutely love it. Moreover, i like the unique "competition" these fat, 4 door family cars bring. It feels more neighborly than anything else. But if anyone wants this to turn this into the child-like Camaro/Mustang thing:

"My car is better than yours!"
"Nuh-uh! Mine is better!"
"My car is better and faster times infinity!"
"Well mine is better and faster times infinity plus one!"
...

then so be it. I joined this forum and read the posts b/c i wanted to learn about this new car and what their owners are doing to them. If i race one and by some stroke of absolutely terrible luck a MM out-does me :D ill give a thumbs up every time. Well, Im just beating this already dead horse to a bloody pulp. Just have fun, dammit! Lata

.Really nice. I think we can move on to a new topic now, don't you ? I started this thread as a REPLY to a question by a member. I supplied a URL, and that was it.
Now, back to Marauders, please ?

I don't see what's causing the angst here. If Chevy still made them (and I could afford a second car) I'd proudly park an SS right next to my Marauder.

I feel the Marauder (and SS's for that matter) are of a more sophisticated vehicle than any Mustang or Camaro. The M&C crowd feel they are in need to compete EVERYWHERE, and are looked upon by local law enforcment as deliquent. I started out driving nothing but Lincolns because all I usually did was cruise the streets. Great car to do this in! Then I rode in my friends Monte Carlo Grande and became a little jealous. Here he had a cushy grandpa two door (the car was origanally his grandpa's anyway) that pulled second gear scratches. I had NO intent to do this to my precious Lincoln, so I seeked another car to add to my growing collection. I wanted something comfortable, yet shure footed and agile. Something quite, but loud at the same time. Something subtle, yet still screams LOOK AT ME to the right people. Something with power, but not overpowered (granted you can never have enoph power :D ) The Marauder fit the bill PERFECT! I'll admit, driving my Lincoln is still MUCH more comfortable than the MM, but the MM can still fit my needs for cruising and can hold up it's own against my buddies who are itching to go for it. GOD I LOVE THIS CAR!

Sure while I am inclined to agree with you, you must take some things into consideration. Where would the SS be today if it had stayed on the market. Who knows maybe Chevy would have offered the convertible, LS-1 powered with a six speed (sigh) and rack and pinion steering. To compare a 7 year old car to a brand new car isn't fair. Mercury had a good baseline to start with (the SS) and improved the design of the FFS (fast 4dr sedan), with the exception of Chevy's LT-1. That is where the controversy comes in. Pushrod motor vs. OHC. But that is my opinion. TIFWIW.

I am sure that owning both cars brings a certain amount of pride to the owner and at the same time a fair amount of criticism to the weakness of both. I would (will) be proud to know first hand.

Oh yea, the SS cost 25,000 compared to the MM 34,000 sticker. :D

bnvus, You hit it on the head, I own both and love em both for different reasons. In '95 i paid 24k for the Impala and was disapointed when it would peel em off the line, a couple g's later I had the wheels spinging and have had a blast ever since. ( I wish there had been a board like this back then (thanks Logan).

This year I paid my 34k and was almost as disapointed with the off the line performance. But thanks to this board I now have the car where I want it.

Sad to say the the Impala will now have to go ( Wife wants a Mini Cooper S)

We really ought to give this a rest. I've said it before...It is holy unfair to compare the MM and SS, as it would be unfair to compare the SS to the Buick GN.

Three champion cars, each a brave step that came to be by exhausting the automotive technology of their day. If Buick did it again, it wouldn't be a GN. If Chevy did it again, it wouldn't be the SS, and next years MM, (if there is one) won't be the same either.

You are not going to equal these cars out for a fair comparasion, it's just not possible. Enjoy them for what they are today, badass cars pushing the technology edge of the time, in a very American way. Eat up...

bnvus...

The GN sold for 1/3 of my annual salary, and a mint copy today sells above the original sticker. The SS sold for 1/3 of my annual salary, ditto. My MM sold for 1/3 of my annual salary, and I'm hoping...

Just everytime I see one, I expect to see 8 guys in grease paint and big floppy shoes get out of it.
Ity's a fast car, and roomy then you would expect, but.....

Just got back from Fast Lane (antique car dealer) and they have a 1995 burgandy SS with 44,500 on the odo for $18,500! Bone stock... I was like HOLY ****... I wouldn't pay that for an SS now, especially when they went for less than $25,000 back in the day!

"Holy (or did you mean 'wholly'?) unfair"? Then why do people compare the mustang to the Camaro? It's a 4.6 OHC against a 5.7 push-rodder. Comparing cars in the same class is totally fair. That's why cars/trucks are seperated into classes and why automotive magazines compare these cars.

Now comparing a Mini Cooper S and a Ford Econoline van would be unfair. But a MM and an SS? Gimme a break

And what are we here to talk about, anyway? Cars!

If we can't compare and contrast the MM with the SS, then what can we compare it with? It's the closest thing out there.

Personally, I love hearing you bow-tie folks talk about your SS experiences and impressions. Another thing for the MM folks here to consider is that our SS friends have years of mod experience with their sleds that we lack. I think we should all pay atention and learn something as they're the closest match to our community there is.

My $0.02.

Hear hear!! well said Fourth!

Nothing beats parking next to an Impalla SS and poping hoods. I look at that classic motor and go "Ohhhh", and the SS guys looking at my soon to be clasic motor and says "Ahhhh", then we both turn to each other and say "Impressive."

Believe it or not, that's a fair price. I paid $19,900 for mine 2 years ago with 55K on the clock.

I own a Marauder, so I cheer for the Blue Oval group, but I am interested in the Bowtie folks discussions too. Being an old Mopar enthsiast, I just wish the Pentastar people were manufacturing something that could be consdidered competitive too. I'll just have to wait for the hemi powered Charger R/T in 2005 :p

I have heard enough...Go ahead and schedule the "grudge match" between us now.. we can be the light, make that heavy, humor at the end of test and tune...two out of three sound good to you??? Maybe we can even get some of the other MMs to come down as well next time.. get one of the modded out guys to run you as well...

But the Tail of the Dragon also beckons.. what's a matter... afraid you'll untie your bowtie out in the twisties??;)

This is a great forum. It's good to see car enthusiasts at opposite ends of the manufacturing world praise and jeer their rides.
