View Full Version : Getting exhaust done

I had to replace my cats like a month ago and the Walker units I had installed on the existing setup already started rattling. Sound was so bad I thought the engine was knocking and had started pricing a forged bottom end rebuild. Was quite a relief when I realized it was the exhaust and not the bottom end.

Since I half assed it the first time by just replacing the cats due to money restrictions handed down by the accountant (aka the wife) I put my foot down and said I'm doing it right this time, not taking any short cuts.

I'm going with a 2.5" SS, with a h-pipe, using Mandrel Bend Solutions 100 cell race cats, Dynomax VT mufflers, and will be installing the 4" Megs tips at the same time. The reason I will still be using converters is I have semi-long drive and the smell without them gets to me when sitting in traffic but I wanted something that will still be good once the ProCharger finally gets on.

This will be done at a local shop called Mad Hatter Muffler here in Tampa. They are a chain but I know the guys here at the shop on Waters do top notch work. It will be all welded mandrel bends because they don't have a bending unit in house.

I'll post pics of it when completed and a sound clip when I get it tuned afterwards.

I want to know how the dynomax vt sound. Can wait to hear them.

I forgot that they offer an over axle kit. I'll have to check on that as the shop I'm having the work done at doesn't have a bender for SS tubing.

I'm hoping the VTs will be good, looking for not to loud at cruising but want it to scream when I open her up.

DOOM, Natehawk, Speed's old MM, another member and myself all have MBS's over axle piping. Greg @ MBS does top notch work. Going to have him do something radical possibly on my 5.0 foxbody exhaust once I have it up and running in the next month or so.

Well I just placed my order for the over-axle kit, some mid-pipes, and hi-flow cats from MBS. Great people, very helpful, the only issue is I don't live close enough to have them do the install.

I also ordered my mufflers yesterday so in a another week or so my other woman will be getting some new bling installed. This is going to slow up my ProCharger project but I will now have an exhaust that will be perfect for up to and beyond my long term goals.

The wife will be mad as hell when she see's the bill but that's how it goes sometimes.

I also know a place now to order the large bends for my pipe setup. MBS is the ****nit!!!!! Big thanks to the Birdman for pointing me in the right direction.

Welcome! Make sure you take pics of the stuff when you get it and have them installed.

Need I say more. Hopefully I can drop it off this week to get installed. Forgive me for the garage I also have a dozen home projects going right now.

If only I could weld I would have the MM on jack stand and be removing everything instead of typing this.

Glad that Greg was able to ship the stuff, I know in the past that wasn't really an option. Looks like he left the mid-pipe alone and for whatever shop you have install it to modify it and all.

Can't wait to get my foxbody up and running and have him do something interesting on it.

Ya the shipping wasn't cheap but well worth it. Still as good a price as I would have paid locally to get a shop to do it.

Nice shoes...

I'm not a photographer so I wasn't worried about my toes showing. Their my 8 year old beater adidas.

It's cheaper than driving there. lol But I know Greg has had someone drive up from FL just to have him work on their vehicle.

Would have been tempted if the current cats didn't rattle so bad I thought my engine was knocking.

Turn music up louder. lol

I can feel it under my feet, reason I got scared and started pricing motors before I crawled under to get a better listen.

Planning on selling off some of the current setup to recoup dome funds along with a bunch of other stuff I have been saving just in case.

What do you want to know?

If you call, ask for Greg. He handles most of the MM/CV stuff.

Sounds great, nice rumble at idle and low throttle but will blow small cars off the road when I punch it. No sound clips right now and will be busy all weekend with my open water dives for my certification but will try to post a few next week.

Only thing is it may be to loud at WOT, and I get that old school muscle car crackle when I open it up. Almost sounds like glass packs on a old box Chevy. Going to take a little getting used but I think I like it.

Took 2-3 hours longer than expected as they had to trim some of the pipes to get everything to clear properly as I was paranoid about the airbags. H-pipe welds aren't the prettiest but no leaks, everything else looks great. Love the way the 4" Megs tips fill up the openings in the muffler.

Happy to see you went with an H-Pipe. I had an X, but switched to a H. No regrets.

Yup wanted the h-pipe sound, love how it's more throaty across the entire rpm range. Nice mellow rumble at idle.

Would have loved too myself but MD was just to far from Tampa when the MM wasn't running right. Got a great product shipped instead and hovered the whole time the guys at Mad Hatter Muffler were installing it.

Thanks Z, still getting used to the new sound. Really makes my shift schedule deficiencies obvious when cruising around. Need to hit a tuner soon to get it straightened out.

I can't get a decent sound clip with my phone.

Will update it as soon as I'm a computer and not on my phone.

I actually didn't get it out till yesterday as I ended with a nasty bug over this last weekend. Had a 102° fever and ended up on a IV for 2 days. Got home tuesday, and back on my feet yesterday, so I was able to send it out at lunch time. The post office said it will be there by Saturday. Sorry for the delay but I was pretty out of it from late Saturday to Monday and Tuesday all I did was sleep.
