I need new front tires and I'm thinking of utilizing the spare. It has never been used, in fact never even seen sunlight, but is 10 years old. An extra $200 saved is nice. Then again, is it too risky? Tire manufacturers say chuck the tire at 10 years, but maybe they are being too cautious. Tire dealers opinions vary. What do you guys think?

I would just use it for a spare only!!!!
Also, I have swapped out a nice spare tire on another vehicle I own with one of the tires that I replaced on it as this was the same questionable issue I had, spare was at least 15 yrs old. (It was a used tire but plenty of tread still left but age made the tire questionable.)
As you stated it's 10 yrs. old and even though it has been in the trunk all that time, the rubber gets old and hard.
Don't take any chances....
If was my decision I would just put new tires on the fronts and keep the spare as the spare or maybe put one of old fronts as your spare.

I thought tires are 'best before' 6 years after manufacture, not 10. After that, what happens is anyone's guess. Reduced top-speed capability? Increased likelyhood of tread-separation, or sidewall blowout? Dunno.

Yeah, not worth it to save $200. God, I hate buying tires!
