View Full Version : 4.10s going on Tuesday!!!

I'm soooo frickin' stoked right now!!! After waiting for over a year to have this done, it's only DAYS away from happening!

Went back to shop earlier today (the place where I got my tires) with my new 4.10 gear set (thanks again HD4!) and talked one-on-one with the head mechanic to get a feel for this place...just straight, no BS, respectful conversation with the guy. No price-haggle on my part; I just plainly told him, "I've got the money now to get this done, but I don't have the money to get it done again."

We probably chatted for almost an hour, and there was nothing he said that threw up any red flags in my mind.

I don't think I'm going to get any sleep between now and next Tuesday. :banana2:

WOOOHOOO!!!! :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

Thanks, Brad. I've been scouring the forums to get a 'things to do after you have 4.10s installed' list...I've got a tune loaded on my hand-held (thanks Russ!) at the ready...

You will LOVE them!

Thanks, tbone....I've been reading/hearing that for over a year now... ;)

Will do...so far, I've spent $140 on the gear set and the plan is to have my diff rebuilt along with the gear install...will know the bottom line by Tuesday afternoon/evening...don't want to throw out any quotes as they are just that...quotes.

I plan on taking pics during the install as well...

Okay....trying to make my list of things to do after I get them installed...having trouble focusing because I'm pinging like a mo-fo...I've called my friends to tell them about it and have smoked 4 cigarettes in the past hour alone...I feel like I just drank 2 pots of coffee and could run the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway right now....and rebuild every bridge on it.

This is what I've got:

Tune for 4.10s...check
Speedo will be off...will this be corrected with tune?
Extra cash set aside for gas...heavy right foot will commence Tues
Extra cash set aside for tires....see above
Clean pair of underwear in glove box...to change into after the first time I WOT.

But seriously, what else do I need to prep for/think about? TIA...:burnout:

Don't worry about the gas, the difference will be negligible.

If you have a 410 tune, that should solve the speedo

Keep the underwear, you'll need it if you do a burnout in bikinis parking lot, or do I've heard

Start saving for headers and a blower for once you feel the difference with 410s you will only want to do more

According to the "Father of the Marauder", Steve Babcock, 4.10's were supposed to be in the Marauder. The bean counters had final say, so we got 3.55's instead.

These might be closer.

The guy that installed my 4.10's is in Durham, N.C.

Checkout Fastlane Motorsports in Benson, N.C.

The guy I talked with yesterday actually brought that up (I was at the ready to do so myself), said his 'gear man' would take the time to get it set up right so there wouldn't be any whine issues...

He's had several of his Mustangs featured in a national/popular muscle car magazine (can't remember the name of it right now).

Yeah, I'll have 'em installed by the time you get your scratches fixed up...OOOOOOoooooo!

Haha...just kidding!

Seriously though, I've heard/read that it's about a 1-2mpg drop, but it's totally dependant on driver's tendencies, I think...I've been doing extra excercises on my right leg (no, the other right leg) to build up stamina so I don't cramp up when I get HRF syndrome...

Hope you get your MM fixed up and catch the MF that dares to do such a hideous thing to such a fine automobile...

#2: Close-up of old clutches (new in background); can't really see it in pic, but mechanic said he could tell there were signs of slippage (TWSS)
#3: 4.10s in....FTW!!!!
#4: That stuff they use to see if gears are set right; lined up perfectly...DYNOMITE!

The mechanic was great. Didn't mind one bit about me taking pics or the dozen or so questions I asked him. He even took the time to explain things to me and talked TO me not DOWN at me. My axles were in good shape and he said all of my rear end components (watch it, Haggis!) were good as well.

I wouldn't have second thoughts recommending him to anyone for any kind of gear work. Jeeps, trucks, Mustangs, even dumptrucks! Have not noticed any whine.

$$$.....

I spent $140 for my 4.10 ring/pinion set. Dropped $305 today. I had my diff rebuilt in addition to the gear install. They charged me $105 for the rebuild kit, $200 for labor. Started on it at 3:15 and done at 5:45.

Not to hijack...but so here's a question.

The rpm's on the highway, everyone says that the increase in minimal. But up here in Toronto, I consistantly drive at 120km/hr (75mph) on the highway. That's the norm on the highway here.
I'm wondering if then the mileage and rpm is going into the relm of being too high? I just don't know because I don't have the 4.10s.

Not really considering that also included the rebuilding of the differential.

My gear swap (only the gears) was parts (I sourced the parts) + $200.00 labor.

I run my MM at 79mph+ on the 3 hour drive to Charlotte, N.C., or the 2 hour drive to Wilmington, N.C. from my house. I've never had any issues with the RPMs being too high. As stated many times before you'll see and increase of about 200 RPM's.

$140 + $305 = $445

Paid $305 yesterday; $105 for rebuild kit, $200 for labor to rebuild diff and install gears.

Sorry if my numbers confused you.

I got a very good deal on the ring/pinion set; the guys at the shop said they would've charged me $250 if I had gotten it through them. I've looked at several websites on the rebuild kit and saw prices range from $99 to $115.

I drive mine at any speed and any RPM and simply don't give a sheet on gas mileage. :burnout:

It's all about maximizing your smiles per miles.

[QUOTE=fastblackmerc;1185222]Why? :dunno:

I feel more comfortable at 80 than I do at 25....

QUOTE]

EXACTLY. In addition, at 80+ you spend less time next to other drivers than you do at lower speeds:

Time next to other drivers gives them more time to ruin your day. :stupid:

I spend as little time next to or around other drivers as possible.

Not worried about driving she rides smoothly at 80. I didn't know if having the rpms up to high for period of time good for motor. Wasn't sure what's too high.

No worries.

I cannot tell you how many hours I have driven my MM with 410's, on cruise at 80.

It will not hurt a thing, and honestly the more RPM's, the better she feels.

Look at it this way...

These overhead cam engines do not start making power till 3,000 +/- RPM's.

At 80 with 410's, I am turning around 2,600 +/- RPM's.

That's not 1/2 way to redline.

I'd roll that speed from coast to coast, and not think twice about it.

Drive it like ya' stole it!

So question I talk to the guy who had my car before and he said he rebuild the rear end 18k miles ago so should I just get the ring and pinion?

Depends if it was done right. The guy that worked on my car told me to have the gear oil replaced after a year, which will be done with the install of your 4.10s. You can also have the mech take a look at the clutches/discs to see if there's anything unusual...it didn't appear to be too difficult a task when my guy took apart my diff...had it out and apart in 15 minutes.

To be on the safe side, you can purchase the kit from a place that accepts returns, and if you don't need it, send it back and get your $$$ back.

This is JMHO and what I can recall from what I was told during my install...

$200 for labor is what I was charged to do install...

changing from stock rear gears to 4.10's etc is a great upgraded... However it is one of the few upgrades I haven't done... I had a 31 spline detroit true trac installed. However, I kept the stock ratio....
I decided to do this due to the fact I now dyno well over 600+RWHP & TQ.
The Marauder is also daily driven in varying conditions.

I feel between the xtra power & its a daily driver... the stock ratio is good.
But for those with less than 500+rwhp &/or do not daily driver, an upgrade to 4.10's seems great. If the vehicle is for the drag.... then I'd say consider 4.30's

I have also heard of pep's using a 3.90 ratio this seems like it it isn't a big change but it is also an option... most seeem to go larger... that go BIG or GO home thing... but a 3.90 is a good comprise ratio imo
