Might as well replace the factory control arms and maybe the rear shocks while your at it. Just wondering, how much is it to powdercoat a differential where you are.

Yep, control arms, sway bar, 31 splines, the works.

You should order another 31 spline posi differential for the F150.

BTW, that is how my MM will look when I do the 4.10 swap.

Just a few miles NE of Rockford. Just over border where I43 & US12 intersect.

If I am pleased with the guys work I'll post his info. He says $100 to $125 is average price for stripped down diff housing. Includes sand blast, treatment & black powdercoat.

Ford used some sh_t steel for our diffs which is why they rust/scale so bad, so doing the powdercoat is an investment in increased longevity.

Nope, no 4.10 for f150. Just a secondary vehicle to drive when MM disabled, haul stuff & drive during salt months while MM parked. It will sit in drive exposed to weather & rot away so only necessary $ put in to it. Lots of rust on frame (poster child for why you should not undercoat a used vehicle) so won't invest a bunch of cash in it. When I get my garage built I'll replace it with what I want w/o settling. :D

Some of you wanted to know where I got this housing powdercoated. I wanted to wait to see what the quality of workmanship and customer service was like before posting this.

As they did a great job and had it completed 1 day early from estimate, here is info.

Tim Dieball
Motorsport Powdercoating
4152 Industrial Court Delavan, WI 53115
(262) 740-2030
(262) 757-0570
(847) 800-7708

From what I can see he does anything from smallest engine parts to what ever fits in the 20' oven.

He said you can ship stuff to him via UPS or whatever and can pick it up when done or pay the freight for him to send back.

My impression was he seems like a decent guy and what he charged for the job was very resonable IMHO.

Ahh, you are correct but it has a foam handle which is the only reason I allowed myself to do it...

My friend leaned on it the other day to steady himself as he had a stroke a few years ago and is kind of wobbley. I all but beat him up with a baseball bat! :duel: Told him I didn't care if he fell on the ground, don't touch the MM paint! :mad2: (Well allright, I didn't say that - JK.)

Cost is not really a problem to me if the job is done right & comes out flawless. :D

Have you set up a ring and pinion before?

Have you set up a ring and pinion before?

Yes, in 1979. :(

All my years of wrenching involved replacing difs with remans to give client/company a warranty.

As it has been so long and I don't want to screw this up I am having one of my clients who is a Ford dealer tech and done hundreds of 8.8's come over to assist. A little cash in his pocket and mabe a beer or 2 and it will be ready to put back under the car! :D

With all those cosmetic upgrades, you have to paint those calipers and get stainless steel brake lines. Then it'll be almost complete.

Very well done. A+ many people here do not realize a break in is needed. After 10 minutes of driving with a new 4.10 install the rear cover gets hot enough to burn your hand!

I used cheap gear oil to break in - then put the good synth in after a few hundred miles. The first 3 heat cycles are most critical.

Powdercoat looks great. Congrats on a job well done.

Thanks! Yes, mating new gear surfaces is very important!

1)Cheap gear oil, short drive & change to cheap gear oil again - this flushes any debris that may have been missed when I cleaned out housing before assembly
2)Run the cheap dino stuff 500 miles like a grandpa (very hard to do:bigcry:) to break in gears
3)Drain & refill with Mobil 1 synth & start slammin' the long pedal! :burnout:
