View Full Version : Stainless Works Headers Question

I ordered up a set of Stainless Works headers today. I got the "off road" ones with no cats. I have a few questions:
Do I have to get the car tuned, or will the Zack tune I have be ok? I don't want to be too lean. My car is NA.
I was quoted $550 for the install by Van at Mr. Norms garage in Rockford. Is that a good price?
Do they come with gaskets? If not, what do you recommend I get?

You should get dynoed for maximum power or Zman man have a tune ready to go. I also know a place that installs for less.

You can re-use your gaskets or get another set of OEM gaskets. They are metal and blow through proof. Some people suggest a tune on a SC engine and not so much on a NA.

How much? New/used? Are you a dealer? I can still cancel the order.

Stick with OEM. I have done the job about a dozen times and tried different gaskets, if it ain't OEM I won't do the job.
$550 is about right on the book but maybe a fellow mm member can give you a better deal.

Anyone have a link for the OEM gaskets? Even an Ebay link would work. I got a set of the Ford Racing Shorty Headers and I need gaskets. And an installer ;)

You can reuse yours or order from Ford

Ford Racing gaskets used to be factory replacements. Also, a tune isn't required after adding headers.

They wanted $450 to put a ceramic coating on them, which is pricey. I wonder if I should paint them?

They are stainless steel so they require no paint, ceramic coating or any other treatment.

I'd recommend the headers, but no cats? What about emissions testing etc?

the ceramic coat will help the under hood temps and they will look new for a long time at least with the jet hot coating

Jet hot coating is the only way to go if funds permit:depress:

Rears turned off in tune. Fronts are before the cats. No lights. No codes. No issues. I have the rear cat delete and passed emissions twice. No visual inspections here. Plus, I'm probably moving to Florida. No testing there.

The choices were polished or thermal coated for $450. No $ for that. $1200 is steep enough.

My guy is pricey at $350 but still cheaper. Not sure if he does the Jet Hot, but his ceramic is damn near chrome. He did a BEATIFULL job on all those turbo pipes I took to him. He Ceramic coated inside and out on the Hot pipes and layed a bright silver on the cold pipes. Judging by his prices he has quoted me for other stuff, he did those turbo pipes for damn near half off and maybe trying to recoupe the loss on my future stuff? IDK I just know his work is top notch and sometimes that is worth the extra cost. One man operation is key to quality. Maybe get a quote from him? Vanilla Gorilla Coatings, his name is Tiger Ray. I think the # is 630 668 3045 IIRC. For the best price, maybe don't name drop me LOL Maybe even say they are for a Mustang...

They will pick up a slight blue color after a little while. They still look great though.

I would go to Justbob's guy and get them coated. Once they change color they dont look real good. I did mine and I am very happy I did them.

I ordered the Maucat setup and i was told thet they come with a silicone type sealant that is better than having a gasket. Yours may come with the same thing.

Not to hijack thread, but seemed a good place to ask.
thinking of the SW Headers with High Flow Cats replacing the one stock set of cats I have. Quick queston, what is the time and cost I would be looking at to have someone do them and is it a straight install or do other parts have to be moved or removed, like the block etc? and will I pick up a noticeable interior noise, hopefully if so, not crazy loud.
I know a lot of this has been discussed somewhere, but just looking for a short answer,, thanks

These are the highest flowing cats you can get: http://www.mandrelbendingsolutions.co m/servlet/the-812/100%2Ccpsi%2C-Cell%2C-Hi-dsh-Flow%2C-High%2C/Detail
Nothing has to be removed to install the cats...other than the old cats.

Maucat is a direct bolt on kit. No welding. You can do youself, took me 14 hours. I've heard people paying $500 for an install.
It will not be that much louder than factory - if you haven't changed the mufflers. I'd say about 10% louder. Old cats (4) are worth $200 cash.
Good luck.

Are you saying you won't have any cats on the car at all? How will you stop the P420 code? Will it be done in the tune or will you block off the secondary o2 sensors?

Rear 02's are turned off in tune. Fronts are before the cats. No visual inspections here. Done.

When I removed the rear cats, the sound was increased(sounds great but still quiet) I would love to remove the front as well.
