View Full Version : My gas mileage SUCKS
Was: mods=K&N & tune - 18 around town, 24 highway
Currently: mods=K&N, tune & 4.10 gears - 14.5 around town, 19 highway
It was degraded before the 4.10 gears so that isn't it entirely. It idles smooth and accelerates and shifts well. No smoke.
Only issue in this time frame (past year) is I feel a slight vibration at 2K RPM regardless of gear, and when at a stop, a vibration swells and dies (RPMs do not change) - Lasts for about 3 seconds - Might happen 30 seconds later. Can be in park or neutral. I am concerned it is the TC - Dunno what else it could be .
Regarding the gas mileage - What might it be? Can a failing TC cause this? Could I use my Xcal3 to datalog something useful?

This is very similar to what I got with same mods and tune. My highway mileage is 22-23 @70 to 80.
I have never figured out why local driving caused such a large drop.
Good luck with improving your mileage. Please post what you did if you improve it.

Exactly the same mileage, mods and vibrations happening here. I've become better at letting the car coast it's way through traffic, hardly ever using the brakes due to the poor mileage.
Driving it grandpa-style also appears to lead to smoky start-up based on what I see at home and what I have read here.

My point is that others with same mods report better gas mileage - 1-2mpg better than I am getting now. I am down 3.5mpg from a year ago. That seems like a large drop.
I am asking are there things I could check or look for? Can I use my Xcal3 to datalog something useful?

I took a MPG hit with my tune due to the converter locking strategy.
I apparently do a significant amount of steady state cruising at 45-60 mph. Once over 50 it's noticeable that the converter is unlocked and wasting gas. Once I hit 62 the rpms drop, and for all highway trips I still get over 21 mpg or so but commuting is 17-18 now.
One of these days I will call up Lidio and get my 91 octane tune tweaked, plus I will have him turn on the monitiors so I don't have any problems with emissions test. Last test had several unsupported messages but they passed me, next year maybe not so lucky.

Your allowed a certain number of "unsupported" during the test.

It is the A/C - As an experiment I shut the A/C to OFF and the vibration went away. Turn it on, the vibrations back. Probably the sign of an issue with the compressor of some sort, but at least it isn't the torque converter.

Do an Eaton swap and enjoy the power so much that you'll no longer care about the poor gas mileage.
But seriously, your gas mileage isnt THAT bad given what the car is what what you have done to it. However a change of 3-5 mpg signals something is different. Id start with the simple things such as MAF wire, plugs, fuel filter, stuck brake caliper, even tire pressures.

It isnt bad for a 4200lb full sized sedan with a 281ci 32v V8 at 4.10s. Id do fuel filter, plugs as those are easy to do in an afternoon and very inexpensive.
BTW, my boss50 stroker averages 15-16mpg city/hwy. So you aint doin bad.

Avg is 18 mpg with a mix of city/highway, all highway and it's about 21 mpg.
Almost a year later and mystery solved! A friends nephew works at a Ford dealership. He took my car in for an overall checkup. He found a code (a light was never on) concerning the fuel pump(? - I didn't write down the code :-(). Part of the diagnostics for this code is to trace wires looking at ground points etc. He found a wire bundle that goes from the gas tank up into the trunk. Directly below the subwoofer, under the carpet, he found one wire in the bundle for the fuel pressure sensor that was worn through bare - about 3/8", and only one strand of wire was left (he took a pic to show me but I didn't think to ask for a copy). He trimmed it, soldered it, wrapped it.
The throttle response and acceleration is much better now. And the gas mileage is better! I went on a 3 hour hour road trip yesterday. And 1/2 was in driving rain at slower speeds and I got 21mpg.
Where the wire is located is where I had stowed the jack (in its carpet sock). I'm guessing it wore through after jostling about.

14-15 around town is not too far off for a 4200 lb luxo-barge. Just use reasonable driving techniques to be sure you're getting all you can.
Be sure your tires are properly inflated
Front end aligned
Air filter not clogged.
Clean your MAF
Also try hypermiling for a while...you'd be surprised how many people drive more aggressively than they think.

I think a solid contender for "most ridiculous bit of accepted wisdom on MM.net" right now is this whole mentality that you shouldn't be allowed to want even decent gas mileage.
Since when is terrible mileage a bragging right?
Why isn't it ok to want power AND economy?

300 WHEEL hp stock on my Camaro, 23 mpg average (heavy city bias). I get to have my cake and eat it too.
Of course, if buying a GM is out of the question, why not get a new Mustang with a 6-speed? Even the V6 models haul ass, and both the V6 and GT get great economy.
I'm just saying, it's one thing when someone comes in here and cries that their Marauder doesn't get 40mpg and starts talking down on it because of that.
But when members get chastised with bull **** like "go buy a Prius" because they'd at least like 20-21 mpg instead of like 13?

Does he still have the pic? Id love to see what you were up against. Would also be a good reference/starting point for when this happens to someone else.
I also feel I need to add my $0.02 to the gas mileage arguement: These cars are 9 and 10 years old and the technology that makes newer, high powered cars get good gas mileage didnt exist then. Variable valve timing, displacemnt on demand, electric power steering, disconnecting alternators, etc are all things that were just in development back then. Also, gas was cheaper back in 2003 and the government didnt require great mileage so auto manufactureres had no incentive to greatly improve fuel economy. I have a friend with a 1975 F250 that gets 3 mpg THREE! Why? because gas was dirt cheap back then and all those wonderful electronics and gadgets we take for granted today werent around at all.
I once talked to a European co-worker of mine and he told me that the "typical American mentality is everyone wants a 6000 lb SUV that carries 9 people, handles like a Ferrari, goes 150 mph and gets 35 mpg." I think in some ways, we're on our way to getting there...

I brag about and tell people to eat off the dollar menu.
Yes I agree it's not the 60s heyday of muscle cars. This is what makes the car so special in my POV. It's a throwback to that time, even before the 60s if you really want to get technical.
People in my town do buy Prius's to brag about their gas mileage. Lot's of them have stickers saying how they are green cars. At redlights I am usually am a major a-hole and give it right back to them by giving the car a ton of throttle so they hear the exhaust. It maybe a douche thing to do, but I am happier putting my view right back in their face as they have put it in mine. The Prius is only the second political car so to say. The VW bus and beatle were in the 60s... it war all over again, but being that gas is not cheap to the general public in this country we are a rare and dying breed. I'm keeping it alive as long as I can, even if I am the last one going.

Here's what I tell people that are worried about Fuel Economy :
Buy a used Crown Vic.
You'll get about 25 mpg on the highway, and you can get a nice one for $5,000.
Or, you can spend $25,000 or more on a Prius.
True, that Prius will get swell gas mileage, but I can buy a **** LOAD of gas for $20,000.
In fact, at $3.50 /gal., $20,000 buys 5,700 gallons of gas.
Averaging 21 mpg, that will take me about 120,000 miles.
At 20,000 miles per year, I don't save a DIMEfor SIX YEARS -
- Even more if I can buy the Vic for cash, and save the interest on a loan.
And in the meantime,
- The Vic seats five real people, plus holds all their stuff in the trunk.
- It can merge and keep up with traffic more safely, and has better survivability in an accident.
- It has enough power to run it's own peripherals, like the heater and a/c.
- I don't feel like I'm wearing it like a cheap suit, or get out of it limping after a long trip.

Fact Sheet on Oil Shale Program
Secretary Salazar's Letter to the Interior Inspector General
The United States holds the worlds largest known concentration of oil shale. Nearly five times the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia underlies a surface area of 16,000 square miles. The enormous potential of this domestic resource is a key to the Nations energy security and economic strength, and to the quality of life Americans enjoy today and hope to ensure for future generations.
More than 70 percent of American oil shale including the thickest and richest deposits lies on federal land, primarily in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. These federal lands contain an estimated 1.23 trillion barrels of oil more than 50 times the nation's proven conventional oil reserves.
More than 50 tar sands deposits are found in eastern Utah, containing an estimated 12 to 19 billion barrels of oil. As oil prices rise, there is new interest in developing both of these domestic resources.
The BLM is working to ensure that development of federal oil shale and tar sands resources will be economically sustainable and environmentally responsible.

Lumping them in with $350,000 exotics, as if that's some kind of legitimate comparison, is even more laughable.
The people who wrote that article were looking to find fault, period. What the hell, why not throw in a 450 Super Duty Tow Truck, or a Chevy School Bus ?

Sounds like those stuck up Brits on Top Gear that were making fun of the Dodge Hemi 1500 pickup truck for not handling like a sports car on a test track.

The American cars all have a utilitarian purpose that defends their mileage. The exotics don't. Really stupid article.
I suppose I should have bought a Honda Fit instead of my E150 cargo van for my construction business.

I have owned both. You can fit the Fit in the E150 and still seat a crew of 5!

Hi Tbone
How much of that goes to taxes?
About 73% ($6.10) goes in taxes
About 21% ($1.75) is manufacturing costs
About 3% ($0.25) is the manufacturers profit
About 3% ($0.25) is the retailers profit

Here is the gas mileage I get with my bone stock P71 DD on my 30 mile commute:
2006 Crown Vic P71 Gas Mileage
05/26/13 268.0 miles/13.4 gal = 20.1 mpg @ $3.49/gal = $46.69
05/21/13 125.2 miles/06.8 gal = 18.6 mpg @ $3.29/gal = $22.27
05/19/13 207.0 miles/11.0 gal = 18.8 mpg @ $3.49/gal = $38.35
05/14/13 184.5 miles/10.2 gal = 18.1 mpg @ $3.25/gal = $33.16
05/11/13 185.3 miles/10.0 gal = 18.5 mpg @ $3.45/gal = $34.63
05/07/13 186.1 miles/10.0 gal = 18.7 mpg @ $3.49/gal = $34.85
05/04/13 191.1 miles/10.7 gal = 17.9 mpg @ $3.49/gal = $37.26

04/22/13 188.5 miles/10.0 gal = 18.9 mpg @ $3.55/gal = $35.47
04/17/13 247.6 miles/13.3 gal = 18.6 mpg @ $3.45/gal = $46.12
04/08/13 177.5 miles/10.5 gal = 16.9 mpg @ $3.55/gal = $37.44
04/05/13 221.7 miles/11.9 gal = 18.7 mpg @ $3.55/gal = $42.28
04/02/13 - 207.6 miles/11.5 gal = 18.1 mpg @ $3.55/gal = $40.92
03/29/13 232.4 miles/12.9 gal = 18.1 mpg @ $3.55/gal = $45.74
03/23/13 245.6 miles/13.4 gal = 18.4 mpg @ $3.39/gal = $45.47
03/20/13 156.1 miles/08.9 gal = 17.6 mpg @ $3.59/gal = $31.91
And ya know what? I aint NEVER driving a Prius, a Fit, and sure as hell no Fiat 500 ! http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/images/icons/icon13.gif
