Fungus!

It looks like dust that may have attached itself to a little moisture.

Thats what I was thinking. How do I get the cluster out to clean it?

Im going with a fungus. that pattern seems way too organized to be moisture. Notice how it spreads in both directions from a central location.

Real easy to clean, you have to take the gauge surround off and pull the gauge cluster,
then the lense is held on with a few screws, I did mine after I bought it,

I am reporting this thread to the CDC, Tommy Lee Jones, and TPFCCM (The People For Cleaner Clusters Movement)

You should suit up, dremel out that part of the dash, remove with tongs, and call the bomb squad for proper disposal.

Good luck and God speed friend.

NAW!

It looks like you just need to give your gauge cluster a shot of penicillin.

BTW: Is there anything dripping from under the dash??

Not to get this post back on track but... Disconnect the positive terminal on the battery. To remove the cluster you have to first remove the radio, buy the tool to do it on ebay or at harbor frieght. Then remove the dot matrix trim. Start at the end with by the doors and pull. Then remover the screws that hold in the in the surround. Don't forget the two above the cluster. Then the cluster is held in by 4 more screws. Once the cluster is out you can remove the lens. I left out the electrical connectors that you need to disconnect along the way but there are several. Some require a small flat blade screwdriver to get them dissconnected.

BTW, it does look like a fungus. I had a friend that had a bunch of cd's that were ruined by some kind of fungus that eats plastic.

Thanks! That is very helpful. I'll be taking the stereo out soon to add an iPod adapter anyway...
