View Full Version : From 03 Black to 03 Black&Gifted - the Eaton Swap

The eaton swap has started! (Well, for the most part). Since the eaton swap itself involves much more than slapping a blower on top of the engine, I figured I would start some of the ancillary work before the car has the upper part of motor gets ripped off (or, to the point of where I decide to just drop in the terminator block sitting in my garage). My stock engine has 110k on it but runs like a champ.

I wanted to start a consolidated thread for the progress and for all my questions because even with what I did so far, I already had some basic questions.

I started with the boot-a-pump install. The thread by JoeBoomz on BAP install is pure money. The BAP was is set to go except for tying in the 2 red wire to the white wire between the fuel cutoff switch and fpdm. Here is the thread: http://mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=74289. This is also the way Impalaslayer wired SC Cheesehead's car PER PAGE 4 of the SC Cheesehead build thread.

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd6030-4900-a050.jpg

The pic below shows where I mounted the BAP control knob. I routed the RCA cable through the underside of the trunk (not trunk lid) where there is also a factory harness being run through

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd6030-493b-47b8.jpg

The next three pics and last 2 pictures show the heat exchanger mounting. I followed Impalaslayer's eaton swap on S/C Cheesehead's car. The last 2 pictures show the bottom mounting bracket I fabbed up to hold the H/E firmly in place. It is not going anywhere.

One thing to note is that I am likely going to rotate the H/E 180 degrees so the inlet/outlet is on the other side (passenger side of car) because of the routing of the i/c lines and the i/c pump will be mounted on the passenger side.

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd6030-4a35-a7d3.jpg

Here is rough shot of the LFP lower pulley hub mounted on the harmonic balancer. Haven't purchased a ring yet but that is the least of my concerns at the moment LOL

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd6030-4a5b-31a4.jpg

I/C reservoir mounted on the passenger side. It is made out of simple metal stock I had laying around. I will likely shorten the bracket by an inch or so to move the reservoir closer to the fender for cosmetics. Nonetheless, it works perfectly as is.

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd6030-4a93-3fbf.jpg

Images of the bracket (and I use that term loosely because it is not pretty LOL) at the bottom of the H/E attached to the front bumper bar, which already had hole to secure the bracket against. There are probably 100 different ways to secure the H/E but this is the one I came up with.

I also want to thank guspech so far for taking pictures of various H/C and i/c pump stuff. He hooked my up and I hear he is dreamy! LOL

Where are yall getting the brackets for the H/E

I just fabbed mine up using metal stock from the Ho Depot. A couple measurements and cuts here...a few bends there...a hole drilled here...and wala!

I bought some aluminum flat stock, and used blow torch to heat up the aluminum for easy bends.

Lookin good man. If you can swing it, I suggest a killer chiller for the summer heat. After three or four summers now I am sick of losing soooo much power. Basically, if this eaton swap impresses you, just wait till fall.. :) Keep us updated.

Thanks! I've been yearning for a blown v8 since I sold my whippled 03 Harley f-150 about 3.5 years ago....and down here in Texas, the 500rwhp felt like I was riding on a 3 legged dog in the summer rather than the mid 12 sec truck it was!

I like the idea of a killer chiller but right now my "play" funds got pretty close to wiped out with my tire/alignment issues....wasn't expecting to have to replace my front tires that had 6k miles on them. Grrrrr.

EDIT: my wife read this and said "um, the Harley truck ran high 12s, not mid 12s.". Remembering things through rose colored glasses LOL. My bad.

Got a few things done today...mainly I swapped around the heat exchanger so the inlet and outlets are on the right (passenger) side of the car. That entailed making a couple new brackets out of flat stock.

I also fabbed up a mounting plate for the I/c pump and mounted it in the right front fender well. It is not the prettiest but it gets the job done and cost me about $0.80 and an hour of my time. the I/c pump was mounted just for fitment purposes and I removed the pump after placement was all good (not going to drive around with that right now!)

Now, for what people are waiting for:

Looking good!!! I would follow the advice that guspech750 gave me and place the fuse for the I/C pump within easy access. It really comes in handy for those times when you have the key on and don't want the pump to run.

Didn't do anything to the car itself today, or with regards to the eaton swap but gave my terminator motor some TLC.

Installed the marauder specific oil pickup tube (the pickup tube actually says "marauder" on it and is part number 3w3z-6622-aa in case anyone is wondering) and torqued it down to spec (89 inch-lbs for the 2 bolts that attach to the oil pump and 18 ft-lbs for the one bolt attached to the windage tray).

Internal engine pics. Rods say "SVT 2r3v-6200-aa, Manley 4401a"...with arp bolts:

Drilled and tapped the lower intake yesterday. It was a VERY simple procedure but it took me a while to get up the nerve because my Lightning IAT sensor looked nothing like the ones in the pics (ford and motor craft changed the part number not to long ago...see pic below). Also, some of the pics from earlier threads looked like there was a fitting/bushing involved where you screw into the lower intake and the IAT sensor screws into that fitting bushing. I was WAY overthinking this. YOU DO NOT NEED A FITTING/BUSHING!

First, I searched high and low for a 3/8-18 NPT tap. Make sure it is 3/8-18 NPT because many places will have a 3/8-16 NC and 3/8-24 NC taps, but these are WAY too small to work. Only place locally that had one was my local Fastenall store for $25. Thy may have them online for cheaper.

Look at the size of this beast:

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd670b-47d3-04d4.jpg
http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd670b-47f8-8aec.jpg

On the tap itself it says to use a 9/16ths drill bit. Fastenall had one but it was $30, so I passed on that and purchased one from Home Depot for $14.

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd670b-48d4-0881.jpg

Here is the new IAT part number:

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd670b-4974-138b.jpg

Drilled the 9/16ths hole:

http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd670b-49d4-ba0b.jpg

After that, I inserted the tap and used a 14mm crescent wrench to turn the tap slowly. Here is a pic of the final product:

Some pics of test fitting in the newly drilled hole:

Hey bro, I need to do mine also, what do you say I come over with beer and we drill and tap mine too. I'm in Pearland better yet if you want to come by after our move we can grill some stuff too! Once I move and get the garage setup i'm jumping into my eaton swap since I have all the parts to do it now. Plus some extras if you are looking for something email me crherniman@gmail.com I may even have it (extra wire loom, heat shrink, connectors, etc etc)

Thats cool. I'm in the woodlands so we will have to coordinate. The wifey and kids are going to Michigan for the remainder of the summer in a few weeks so my weekends should be open.

Unfortunately, I haven't done anything re eaton swap since my last post in this thread except visualize the rest of the swap. Lol.

I'm just missing the COT but know a few people that I hope can help me with the welding and pressure test.

Right on brotha! I have been busy moving and trying to get things together. I do however have a fabbed up cot and an extra stock unit that are handy if you want to use the extra I have and replace with yours when you remove it. Just email me man.
