I got a couple exhaust tweaks done this month - nothing too big, I want to stick with the stock engine for now, and too much more will bring it over the 450HP mark. I've never been much of a gambler...

First thing to get done was a rear cat delete. I was really on the fence about this one because some people made it out to cause a lot more noise, while others said it kept things quiet. I wanted things quieter because my Merc is a 60-minute a day Daily Driver and I've never personally been a fan of obnoxious exhaust.

Here are the pics of the exhaust with the rear cats replaced by straight pipe:

Second change was the exhaust tips - Dad and I both got a 4" set on ConeEng's production run last year and I got them put on at the same time as the cat delete.

Notice these tips are straight through, no resonators inside (see original ones below)

An adapter is required to get these attached, and the guy that did it grumbled that the tips were too large for this car, but he was able to get it done anyway.

...continued from Post 1

After getting the rear cats removed and the resonators in the tips removed, I am happy to report that the noise did go up - but only where it counts, when the pedal is down all the way. Cruising at highway is close to as quiet as the original exhaust.

There seems to be a small increase in power as well but my car is supercharged and benefits more from exhaust back pressure reduction than a NA car will.

Here's what the removed cats look like, you can see how restrictive they are on the inside:

Final verdict: IF YOU CAN DO IT WHERE YOU LIVE, DO IT.

Except for these mods, my exhaust is 100% stock. And the car now sounds like it SHOULD have from the factory. It's nowhere near as raspy as a set of headers and an X-pipe would have made it, and the factory drone is 100% gone now. I am very pleased with the results.

That is what I did but with the stock size replacement tips from Meg's.
It really sounds good with no rear cats.

Now put on Magnaflows and the car will have the same level of noise but that noise will sound very Beefy.

An ultra-rare JoeBoomz Duplicate Post:

Sorry guys, I have been meaning to get the car out to a quiet highway to get videos of both the stereo and rear cat delete setup, however I grounded the car after discovering the front tires are a bit too far gone:

!!!

New tires are being put on the rims tomorrow and hopefully some evening this week I will get out to make the vids.

This is what I want to give myself for my birthday in Aug. With mufflers (TBD) and maybe cutouts ala JustBob.

This will all be after NJ Inspection.......

I did a vid of the new stereo too but aren't happy enough with it. I will re-shoot tomorrow night if it's not raining and post it then.

BTW. If you take that OEM tip and place it over two concrete blocks and punch out the "resinator", you will find that it is nothing more than the factory tailpipe extended through the tip.. Nothing special about it. Then simply reweld the tip back on like I did some three years ago now. AKA "poor man deletes"

There is your free daily cheap mod advice brought to you by justbob. :)

I feared removing the rear cat would cause some exhaust smell. I guess not. I've had some magnaflows for over a month but haven't had them installed. I guess I will real soon. Your car sounds good.

Take off all four and you will. Starting mine brings back memories of the late '70's.
