I've read that the fluid may not be antifreeze.
Other than it's leaking - What is involved in replacing it if replacement is required.
Thanks,
Mark

The ac accumulators rot from the inside out since ford cheaped out and uses low grade metal instead of aluminum, its a very common issue with ford products.

Any issues in continuing to drive it?
Thanks,

No, but you can pick up a new oem unit from rock auto, i think i paid like $64 bucks for it.
That green stuff is your freon leaking out, and in about 6-7 years you get to do it all over again!:(

What is involved in replacing it if replacement is required.Although mechanically it's fairly simple, unless you have the right equipment and training it's not a DIY job. You need to pull a vacuum on the system to ensure no moisture gets in. Then recharge the R134 and compressor oil properly. And no, those refill-it-yourself kits from Wally World won't work. Fortunately, the repair isn't expensive...

Since his system is leaking its going to have be evacuated at this point anyhow, the loop is no longer sealed.

Correct, which is why I told him it's not a DIY job...

Thanks to both of you.
I had a feeling that it was drivable and that I could not do the repairs.
I can sleep tonight.
Thanks again

The only problem with driving it and not doing the repairs it that the longer you wait the more damage you will do the the AC system and the repair will be more expensive.

Where is the accumulator located ?
What are the signs of one going bad oter than leaks ?

Its between the battery and radiator.
the r134 will leak out and your AC will stop cooling. leave it open to the atmosphere long-term and interior corrosion could occur, requiring replacement of additional components. (although this is unlikely in the time frame we are probably talking about ). the green color is dye in the refrigerant oil which is put there to help you find the leak.

The lime green is die that the factory put in the A/C system. The fluid is the lubrication for the compressor.

How much did it run you? The bottom of my accumulator has yellow/green fluid on the bottom of it.

Btw, if you don't get an A/C problem fixed, you can lose the pump. The oil doesn't circulate and you can burn it out. Not turning on your A/C isn't such a big deal, but, if you turn on the heat in the winter, it uses your A/C system. I had to unplug the wire harness that engages the clutch last winter so I could use the heat until I got mine fixed. Not to mention, it looked and smelled like the 4th of July when it was going.
