View Full Version : Will your Marauder bark the tires going into 2nd gear?

My buddy and I were having an argument about this. His mom has an '03 300A Marauder and he can chirp the tires when going into 2nd gear at WOT. Mine will not do that. But, being as it's a 300A, it doesn't have the traction control that my 300B does.
So, is it the traction control that's hindering the tire-chirping, or are the 300A's a little bit stronger than the 300B's? I thought it was 2004 that they revised the transmissions?
Thanks,
Chad.

My 03 with Traction Control will bark the tires easily going into second. I have learned not to push to hard into second during a turn cause the 'barking' of tires will cause thecar to go sideways.

Mine'll do it. 300A with 4.10 Lidio tune.

This may not be correct, but here are my thoughts:
--Turn T/C off and tires should bark
--If T/C is on, you can still bark em, but don't go WOT; if you go WOT, this might activate T/C before you hit 2nd gear, thus no bark
--Gear ratio is a factor
I'm speaking from personal experience, not technical expertise. I don't ever remember getting a bark from 1-2 when I had 3.55s; now that I have 4.10s, it's pretty easy. Also, with the T/C on, I've noticed when I go WOT now I don't get a 'bark'...more like a 'chirp', if that. But if I'm close to but not WOT, I'll get a 'bark'. With T/C off, getting a bark is easy.
Let's see what others say...

This is why, actually, it's quite a bit stronger than the "B's" and the '04's.

Mine does not chirp the tires. Mine spins until the rev limter is hit in 1st and through the 1-2 shift and hits the rev limit in 2nd.
Try premium gas it works wonders.

Don't recall my '04 chirping the tires, my '03 did after I had the tune and gears installed.
Now that it's SC'd well, that's kinda a whole different story... ;) -----> :burn:

My Rauder is 2004 300B SB and everytime the tires will chirp if I get on it or hammer the pedal from 1st to 2nd.
Needless to say, it will rev.....SCREAM......all the way before the limiter kicks in and shifts like a mother.....just the way I like it.
Still have the 3.55 gears with a TCI shift kit installed, Art Carr deep sump tranny pan, and plenty of AMS oil to keep her satisfied!
Traction Control was never an issue with or without it activated......FYI

I've chirped 2nd in stock 300As and in my '03 300B with and without the TransGo modified valve body. I bet it would be more pronounced with 4.10s.

Stock - no bark
Tune installed - lots of bark
Stall converter installed - no bark
4.10s installed - some bark
J-mod performed - bark and spin at 60% throttle and up, 40-59% throttle the tires will bark half of the time.

Methinks I'm off the fence about doing the J-mod...the video helped, too.
Then I'll have to calibrate my right foot to above throttle thresholds so I'm not barking/spinning every time...lol.
Thanks man!!!

Mine only "barks" THIRD gear, it bangs the rev limitter and gets stupid in second. More like REEEEEEET!
So a bark in second? Not really. :)

If i leave it in drive and floor it, very rarely will my car chirp second since the converter install. Even with bumped up pressure and a valve body plate installed it still won't do it all the time on its own. Now if I shift manually it will chirp the tires every single time.

Just set your shift pressure to ZERO % and then adjust up as to your liking. It took me a while of different driving to figure out mine and then adjusting light/medium/heavy shift %. I like having a tuning program so I can adjust more things, only draw back is I can only do adjustments via my laptop and not on the handheld device.
With having a stock torque converter you will feel a whole lot more than with an aftermarket converter since they do soften up the shifts some.

I'll try that.
My buddy's mom's '03 300A was purchased with only 10k miles on it, so the previous owner might have (probably did) modify the car with either a tune or different gears because he said it won't only chirp the tires, but it will step sideways once the tires chirp as well and that definitely sounds like something a stock Marauder won't do.

03 300A here, all factory expect J-Mod (drilled holes, but springs not removed...when I did the jmod and removed springs in my 01 it beat me like a crackhead needing a fix) and no bark with OD on or off from any gear or speed. If I manually shift (which I dont do too often as I hear it destroys the tranny) and shift around 5K from first, I can get a chirp sometimes into second.

I forgot to mention I did have my springs removed and upgraded a few other little parts the valvebody, can't remember what parts at the moment.

Whose got opinions on B&M shift kit vs Dirty dog's??? Or have a J mod done??? My understanding is that the shift kits or trans valve body's are a j mod already done and ready to install...

300A and 300B without the J-mod, nope..
300A & 300B with the J-mod and nothing else, YUP! In fact on the B when it shifts, it will bark and then the traction control light will come on for a few seconds..
Interesting trivia, both the 300A and the 300B have the exact same J-mod at about the same mileage. The A consistantly has a noticaby harder 1-2 shift then the B. The A's have a different factory PCM tune than the B's so maybe there is a difference in the trans pressure settings. Or when they were building the trannys for the A's they told the tranny guys, better make the clutch packs on the tight side to help eliminate heat and slippage on WOT shifts.

There were at least 6 different stock PCM tunes on the Marauders. The tune was changed quite frequently on the line during 2003-2004.
PCM codes include: FDH2 (300A), BMD0 (300A), CRD0 (300B), CRD1 (300B), MAV2 (2004), and JHM0 (????). The 1BMF code is "bogus".
I suspect that very few of the regular members here are still running any variant of the stock tune. The shifts points and pressures on my tune are considerably improved from the stock CRD0 that I had. And as I recall, the CRD0 tune was one of the better/preferred stock tunes available IMHO.
Distribution of original PCM codes is here >>>>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=24401&highlight=CRD0

My buddy says his mom's '03 300A is a bit quicker than mine (by seat of the pants) so maybe it's modded.....or the 300A's are that much quicker than the 300B.

Could be......Nope.
I should add, since going to slightly taller back tire and ditching the BFG's a couple years back, it doesn't make as loud of a bark. Or walk sideways on launch. Crappy ast BFGees...

Chirp/bark and a 3-5 inch sidestep nearly every time on the 1-2 shift. Even on the hottest of days on the best pavement.

I ended up finally lowering my pressures, hopefully it took and will be more gentle on my back LOL Now I have it at -25/-15/0 It never shifted all that hard till I did the 4.30's? Must be something different in the tune to cause that?

Made 'em bark a couple hours ago. Dude on a nice looking bike w/light effects and I were side-by-side at stoplight. I thought, "if he tears it up off the line, I'll follow". He did, so I did. This all happened in a span of 2 seconds, so didn't turn O/D off or T/C off. Didn't floor it on green as was waiting to see if he would take off..he did, so I quickly, but smoothly, increased pressure on gas pedal to 3/4 WOT...1-2 shift happened around 50mph, was hard and tires barked then let off the gas since SL is 45 (I was at 55 already). Even though he got a huge jump on me off the line, I think he was surprised to look in his mirror and see me about 2-3 car lengths behind him...I don't think he expected to see anyone that close to him.
Needless to say, I had a big grin on my face from the moment my tires barked til I got home....

In first gear above 3500 it pulls so hard that the back is almost slipping at 20+ MPH, and I have Nitto 555 265 50 18 all around (sticky wider than stock tires) No bark on 1-2 as I have a converter...
