Anyone ever have any luck cleaning a malfunctioning EGR Valve??
I got a CEL yesterday and the car was bucking a little under constant speed and light load.....thought the Coils might be on the way out but p0401 "Insufficient EGR Flow" showed up.......can you even clean it??
A new one is $100 or so and I'll probably just go that way unless someone offers hope with cleaning it!!:cool4:

A lot of views and no comments.....WEIRD??
Well......I pulled it off and it was stuck closed so I freed it up and cleaned it up!!
Put it back on and VOILA......throttle response is much better and surging and goofy performance is gone....WOW!! :banana2:
I was surprised at how clean it still was with all the miles I have on it!!:D
I guess the engine is still pretty healthy at 240K+ miles.....sure runs a bunch better!!
I have a new one coming anyway!!

I'd clean it with carb cleaner.

I did but it's CARBON and it's not soluble in anything so I just blew it out after soaking it with carb cleaner and it is working.....for now!!:D

Well folks......I installed the new EGR Valve and......WOW!!!
I would never have guessed it but the car is like new again.....great throttle response......rock solid idle (this has been a continuing problem)......minimal start-up "flare".......I cannot believe the old one was causing all the problems but it appears that it was!!
If my gas mileage around town improves that will convince me that the old EGR Valve was the culprit and I'll bet several of the IAC's I tossed out were not bad??:shake:
How long is the EGR Valve supposed to last anyway??

I believe it's for 8 years or 80k miles.

I would guess the lack of answers was 'cuz nobody knew. I sure didn't. Thanks for the info.

I've read some threads about EGR valves causing a condition called "trailer bucking". Suggested replacing the EGR valve. How difficult was it to pull the old one off?

It was quite easy......I was surprised!!
Big nut on exhaust tube.....2 vacuum connectors......1 electrical connector and 4 10MM bolts (2 on heat shield and 2 hold it on) and it falls into your hands!!:D
I recommend getting the Ford unit since it comes with the metal gasket and bolts.....others charge $20.00 for the silly gasket!!

Or just delete it all together :)

These cars run better with an active EGR Valve and are more efficient so I would never disable one!!:shake:
They are disabled in all vehicles at WOT so your performance WILL NOT IMPROVE by "deleting" it....PERIOD!!
