View Full Version : Strange Whistling Noise

I've noticed that my car has begun making a whistling noise that seems to come from under the hood. It starts making it while I'm going just over 40mph every time, but only after I've been driving for a few minutes. It's not a loud noise, but it's definitely there and audible- sort of like a quieter turbo whine. I've never really had it above 65 since this started so I can't tell you if it ever goes away or not depending on speed.
At any rate, does anyone have an idea as to what this could be and/or if it could easily be fixed by someone without a lot of experience as a mechanic? Thanks in advance,
PR

Do you have a Mach 1 chin spoiler?

Possibly the beginnings of the idler pulley whine. You should be able to hear it at idle too. If so, it'll get worse. Don't let it go too long like I did. :o

Sounds like the chin spoiler whistle or perhaps a window seal.

It doesn't have the Mach 1 chin spoiler and I haven't heard the whine during idle yet  Like I said, it only seems to be doing it after a certain speed and after so many minutes of driving it.

Does it match the tune being played on the radio?

Another thought is that I sometimes get a "whistling" from the airvents when the A/C is blowing at Mach 1. This goes away when the fan speed cuts back. I figure this is just air passing over a restricted area much like blowing across the top of an open bottle. Does anybody even do that anymore? :dunno:
Of course, this is related to fan speed not vehicle speed.

The ironic thing about all of this is that it started doing this the day after I finally got my mechanic to clear up the gear whine after having 4.10s installed.

Was there any solution to this? :dunno: I seem to have a slight whistle sound  too going 50+mph. No chin spoiler....

My Marauder has done this since I installed the chin spoiler.
My GM started doing this after It came back from a full body paint job.... Not sure if a rubber molding somewhere has an opening and is letting a whistle from the wind into the cabin.

My whistle is only heard on the outside when the window is open at 50+ mph. Does your whistle sound on the inside too?

Yes, almost as if behind the dash or above the windshield. Looks like the rubber weatherstripping is just as before any work was done to it though.
The chin spoiler on the marauder is an exterior whistle almost as if air is coming out of the hood opening by the wiper cowl incorrectly.
