View Full Version : ? about factory tune and 4:10's

I know this question has been asked before but the new guys might not know and the search box is useless to all but Bluerauder.

Have a guy who can do Ford Racing 4.10 gear swap for what I think is a fair price (soup to nuts included). He does a lot of Mustangs and other Fords. When I get around to this I will post up a review if I feel he is worth recommending to the MM community. Mustang guys love him so we'll see.

Anyways questions are as follows. I would be keeping the Zack tune for 3.55's briefly till I can get a 4.10 tune. I know the speedo will be off with the 4.10's but can't remember which way. Is the actual car speed going to be faster or slower than what the speedo reads? And about that Zack tune is there any danger in driving it for an hour or two with the 3.55 tune. I know the transmission will be confused as to where it should shift but once it's into O/D it should be OK right? Do I risk damaging the transmission or anything else for that matter?

Car has 111K. Are there any other parts in the differential I should have replaced as long as it's apart? This is Ms. Denmarks car so big firey burnouts will be at a minimum but spirited romps into the upper reaches of the speedometer gauge are not out of the question.

Got to save the pennies for a tuner (for the SB) but thinking about putting the cart before the horse as they say.

Thanks for taking the time :)

I had my differential rebuilt while it was open. I was charged $105 for the rebuild kit. I paid $200 for labor for both gear install and diff rebuild. The mech said the discs were just starting to show signs of wear (grayish color on the discs), so doing the rebuild was a good thing. Since your MM has about 20k more miles, I'd highly recommend having this done.

It appears one 'variable' that causes the price of a 410 install to double (or more) is the condition of the rear axles...mine were in good shape, so didn't have to cross the bridge of having to replace them.

Make sure the gears are set EXACTLY right when they are installed...your mech should use some kind of paste/goo/whatever it's called to make sure the teeth are seated/aligned properly; if this is not done right, you will have gear whine. Also, my mech had to disconnect the ABS stuff on the rears in order to move the rear drums/axles...it threw him off a bit as Mustangs don't need to have this done (what he said), but he figured it out in less than 10 minutes.

Lastly, I was sooo excited about having 410s that I completely forgot about uploading my tune until the next day; have not experienced any issues from running on 410s for about 24hrs with a 355 tune. My speedometer seemed to be faster than what I was actually doing (this is what reminded me to upload the 410 tune). I was doing around 50mph, but it felt like I was going much slower, confirmed by the number of cars that were passing me (usually the other way around).

I posted up pics of my install on one of the many 410 threads that are out there...maybe Bluerauder can find it for ya...;)

Hope the above helps shed some light for you...Ms D will love 'em!

Yes the axles need to be look at when the gear swap is done. I just when through catastrophic axle failure................65xxx miles

I had the decided to go with the rebuild kit before I even took it to the shop.....as it turns out they said it didnt really need it....but there was some rust on the pinion bearing and over time it would fuse to the pinion. Other than that there were no issues found and the rear end was in good shape for the 111k on my car.

Like they say..... "expect the best... plan for the worst"

As for the tune, you won't damage anything but the shifts will be off.

+! on that!

If the axles have 111k miles on them I would consider replacing them now while it's apart. My axles were replaced under waranty at around 25k miles and when I rebuilt the rear @115K miles the axles were already worn enough to replace again!

If your going to replace the axles, I'd consider 32 spline axles and carrier.

Before any makes a comment: Yes, this is a revival of an old thread

Pickin up my Marauder tomorrow. The guy who's sellin it to me had 3.27s installed about 2000 miles ago (why why why?!). He never had it tuned for those gears. By what I've seen in this thread, the health of the transmission and all other powertrain don't seem to be affected. Can anyone else attest to this?

I know the shift points will be off. Noticed this ever so slightly while test drivin it. It's gonna be a little bit before I can pop some different gears in there. Anything else I should be on the lookout for?

I'm just wondering why someone would put 3.27s in, when it came stock with 3.55s?

That makes two of us...

Said he wanted really good highway gas mileage and it had 4.10s in it before that. I don't know why you wouldn't go back to 3.55 though. Grrr....

Congrats!
I'm not an expert on these cars, but in general, driving a computer controlled transmission/car with incorrect gear ratio will throw off speedo accuracy and shift point. I don't believe you will 'harm' anything.
Think of this - how many guys put wrong diameter tires on the back and don't tune for them? Same thing, pretty much.
Buy a SCT tuner from Mo's with tunes for 3.27 and 4.10 we know you'll install ;) and correct it now.....

I had the 4.10's installed when I did the larger Throttle body. I then took it to Second Street Performance in Perkasie Pa. and had Bill do a dyno tune. He is a master. My stangs and the Marauder have never driven so strong.

Yeah, and about as much low end, off-the-line grunt as a prius in this car

I will say though, once you hit about 3000 rpms in 1st at WOT, the 3.27s really start to dig in and move that weight. Second gear top end feels even more effortless once that weight is moving. I'd just rather have more dig in the low end, especially since I'm probably gonna be keepin it N/A.

Thanks for the mention of a speed shop. I needed to know of one since I'm new to Lancaster PA. Looks like it's almost two hours away but I'm getting my 4:10 gears soon.

As others mentioned, no you will not hurt the car in any way, you'll just have wonky shifting and an inaccurate speedometer.

All fixed now! Tunes by the fellas at Mo's really make it shine. Nice firms shifts all at the right timing, speedo corrected, gasoline burnin goodness :)
I know my Marauder is much happier now, as am I.
