Well if you have been following this thread:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=79929
You'll know I have completed a major rear axle project including the installation of Ford Racing 4.10s.

Al I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow!!!!!

Talk about a different car! The bean counter at Ford that put the stop order on the "fitted from factory with 4,10s" should be strung up by the jewels over a hill of red ants and covered with honey! :argue:

My face hurts from smiling all afternoon while driving around Milwaukee with a friend after working on his Firebird. :D :burnout: :D

Anyone who is on the fence about doing this mod, JUMP! Anyone who is not considering it, reconsider!

Compared to the other things you can do, this is an inexpensive mod that pays back huge!!!

I think you need to shift the blame here to where it belongs. It would make minimal difference to Ford on the cost of 4.10s vs 3.55 gears. The problem is where it would hit the EPA estimated mileage figures and impact the CAFE ratings negatively.

If you're going to be mad at someone, be mad at the gubmint. They're here to help, remember?

That is who I was referring to.

The MPG difference between the 2 gear sets affect on CAFE was not worth the neutering effect they chose. :mad2:

So, with the 4.10's, will it finally keep up with an Impala SS out of the hole?

How much did the 4.10:1 install run you?

If a person did gears only probably $350 would cover gears & labor. I did a lot more. Did all work myself & paid a client who is a cert Ford tech at local dealer $100 to stop over with his 8.8 install stuff to set up pinion depth & backlash.

I did an entire project including:
Gears (got free - birthday gift from family members)
Full install kit (Sparta)
31-spline Cobra carrier & axles (Sparta)
New shims for carrier back-lash adjustment (local Ford parts dude)
Powder-coated axle housing (local vendor) $125
CME control arms & Watts-Link (Sparta)
Break in fluids

Probably $1850

I paid a total of $445. $140 for ring/pinion set (I bought from a member on this site), $105 for diff rebuild kit (garage/shop price), $200 for labor. A Ford dealership quoted me $1400 for the same thing.

Get 'er done!

Makes you wonder why so many are sitting on the fence about doing the swap..... :dunno:

How much does it change city/highway mileage?

How much does it change city/highway mileage?

I lost 1.5 mpg in my day to day commute and ~2 on the freeway runs.

Smiles and out of the hole response make up for it though!

So, now it's about 15/21 instead of the 17/23 a stock one will get?

what does the swap do, improve the acceleration, 0-60 1/4 mile etc?

I see a lot of Yeah, well here's the other side of the coin. I'm contemplating pulling out the 4.10, and replacing them with 3.73. On highway runs at the most 80 MPH I'm getting ~250 miles out of a tank. I've taken the same trip with my CVPI with 3.55 gears and get ~ 350 per tank which was the same as my original MM with the same gears. On a NA marauder I can see the advantage but a SC MM doesn't need all that help of getting out of it's own way.

Now I have a Silver Birch Crown Vic LX with 2.73 Gears to drive to work so... 4.10's may appear on the Marauder soon

They should smoke an Impala even before the gear swap, at least I know mine did!:D Gear swap was the single most fun swap (until I can install a supercharger).:depress:

So there is a large noticeable difference between 3.73 and 4.10s in a NA slightly modded MM?

With the 4.10s does it seem like its revving too high on the Hwy?

At 80 with 3.73 I'm spinning just a tick under 2500, over 2500 the gas starts to go fast.

I get 23MPG @ 80 with 3.73.

Now those are numbers I could live with. If I'm extremely lucky I'd get 15 MPG @ ~78 MPH with 4.10's

Little late to the thread, but I have 4.30s and on the freeway I manage 20mpg. Don't quote me on this, but this is what I found for rpms at 80mph:

3.55 = 2335 rpms
4.10 = 2696 rpms
4.30 = 2828 rpms

I'm right at 2800 at 80, so I believe my numbers are close.
