A friend and i arrive at our local CarMax (he is in search of some kind of Infinity) So while him and the associate are talking numbers and looking at cars i chose to get my car appraised, lol.
My car is a daily driver with a few dents and dings and a few paint issues and so forth.

Mods at the time of appraisal (functional and cosmetic)
120k miles
Lidio tune
flowmaster super 44's
k&n cold air intake
chin spoiler

What the appraiser said....
1. Roof and trunk lid repainted (obviously, they needed it) also the rear left quarter panel has been also (I did not know this...)
2. Car was not intended to have a chin spoiler, might have damaged the underside of the front bumper by adding it. "may have compromised the structural integrity of the bumper"...... WTF
This is a good one!
3. Transmission shifts too hard, after diagnostics noted vehicle will be needing a new transmission... HA! @ THAT (I laugh at this comment because my tranny was serviced by ford a few weeks ago and they said all is good)
4. Aftermarket filter maybe restricting airflow.... Seriously? other than that engine in good condition.
5. Seats and carpet in good condition

Soooooo after i got the print out i asked to speak to the appraiser... for some odd reason they did not want me to (claimed he was busy, of course he was not). I asked how may adding a chin spoiler affect the structural integrity of the bumper.. he says something along the lines of "U might drilled into something when u added it or knocked something loose". Then i asked if he really thinks i will be needing a new transmission soon... he said "its obvious, there is no reason for the car to shift the way it does" (hard shifts, Thanks Lidio :):D:)). Then i asked how is the K&N filter restricting airflow... i thought it was proven to increase it?... his words "If u, yourself did not test it or witness it being tested against the oem one... u shouldnt believe everything u read"...
So after i played with him for a few more minutes i asked how did he come up with the final number. He said with the paint work needing to be done... and new transmission and returning everything to stock thats how he came up with it... (by now are u wondering what they appraised my car for?).....

$3,100.........

CarMax on Beaver Ruin rd. in Norcross Ga is willing to pay me $3,100 for my car.... LOL AHA!
So a Marauder with 120k and the most BASIC of mods and needs a touch up paint job is worth around 3k. It's funny because i know if i really wanted to sell my car right now i could probably get upwards 6.5-7k.
Great laugh we had up there.

I know my car isnt worth a whole lot.... but damn he could have least said 5k sheesh. I still love it even tho Drew W. Certified CarMax Appraiser thinks its only worth 3,100  give me the short end of the stick so u can get 8k for it at auction

He's an idiot that is just trying to sucker you. Apprarently he thought you were just some joe blow who doesn't know anything. The K&N thing was pretty funny. He said just because you didn't witness the test doesn't mean it's true. He didn't test it or witness it, so how does he know it's not true? I would trust K&N over him anyday of the week. He didn't even realize that you could re-program the car and make it shift like the factory shift which is worse for the tranny anyway.

Carmax offered me 5k for my car 4 YEARS AGO. Jokes.

CarMax has become a rip-off. Back in 1998, I got $2000 for my 1989 Honda Prelude. Had 168k, A/C inop, parking brake inop, cruise control inop, rims were aftermarket (not high-priced, just your run of the mill American Racing Eagle 5-stars) and tread almost done for, Alpine cassette player w/6-disc changer in trunk, which had crapped out on me a month or so before, interior was fair at best, exterior was good.

Last December, I was given an appraisal of $1200 on my 2001 VW Jetta VR6. Had 135k on it, had all maintenance records, tires only had 5k on them, interior was very good, with the exception of a 3" tear in the back seat, front edge of hood had a dozen 1/2" diameter and smaller chips from living in Mass through 4 winters, ONE dent/ding the size of a dime on trunk lid. Everything worked on the car like it was supposed to. Before I went, I noticed on their website that they had two Jettas on their lot...one was a 2003 TDI with 120k listed for $5200 and the other was a 2001 GLX with 140k listed for $4500...I thought I would be offered $2000-2500 for mine based on this....nope!

Not taking sides here but they're in the biz of making $$.

They know what your car is worth.

You'd do the same thing if buying a car: Point out all of its flaws and lowball the seller.

I know that I would do this and have done this.

This reminds me of a friend who had his '93 Buick Regal appraised at CarMax about 8 years ago. It wasn't in bad shape really, they appraised it at something like $175. I think he framed the appraisal, LOL

Had my 2005 Diesel Excursion appraised there before I got my Marauder. Blue book put it at about $21,500. It also had all the best engine mods and ran like a new truck. They offered me $8,000. I laughed my way out of there!

thats carmax for you! I do not know what they smoke but its good stuff. A few years back I was looking to get a Lincoln LS8 and they had one, it was 20,000. They wanted me to put down 19,000$!!!! I chuckled and stood up and told my girl we are leaving, granted that was the loan place but carmax in general are pretty dumb. Ok if you are buying a car and have your own means of finance or can pay cash but if you are trying to get an appraisal and things like that they'll get down right idiotic.

Well I got a good Car Max story you should all like. I had a 2008 mustang gt with 9000 miles on it i brought it there for a joke cause a friend was going. They offered me 13k now the funny part is they had a 2005 with 35000 miles that i could tell had damage previously on it and they were asking 18900. About a month later I actually sold the mustang using autotrader where you enter the info and they make offer. If the car is what you say it is then the dealer you go to will honor that. They gave me 19k without buying a car from them. So you can imagine what i think of car max.

These cars are worth a lot to the group here on the site but dealers look at it different, it's money to them. These cars are going through the auction here in Chicago from $4,500 to $8,000 for a low-low mileage car, thats what they have been paying for them then they add to make a profit. Joe average out there look at these cars as a 10 year old mercury, not a Marauder.

back in ~2007 my dad was selling his 1992 AM General Hummer

this is how it looked at time of appraisal except for the addition of a full size off road roof rack.

this was right when the F450 with super duty body had just come out. my dad was looking for a diesel crewcab longbed truck to replace his Hummer. so he brought it into the local Ford Dealership to see what they would give him on trade. they inspected it for 20-30 minutes and went inside. then took an hour to come back out to give their appraisal. $4000. four grand, seriously? My dad was like this roof rack brand new was $4000 installed. these wheels alone are $750 new each, these tires are $400+ new each. we just drove out of there.

it's ok because my dad sold it for more than 7x their appraisal a month later.

I had a 2002 Nissan Altima. Worst car I ever had. Carmax gave me 900 bucks & I was glad because they got a lemon. I felt safer in my 1984 Chevy Citation before the Altima.

Just wow!

I avoid stealer-ships at all costs.

I don't think we have car max here, doesn't sound like we are missing anything...
