View Full Version : timing chain tensioner?

In one full revolution of the crank my right side chain tensioner moves up and down an 1/8 of an inch and lets this much slack in the chain. The left side does move a little but not as bad as the chain never leaves the guide like the right side shouldn't the ratchets prevent this from happening. I'm trying to find a reacquiring noise in the motor and i think it might be the chain slaping the guide. There is no oil pan on the motor so i don't know how the tensioners are supposed to act with out oil pressure but you can see them pressurize as im roatating the crank around. I don't think it is right.
Any help would be appreciated

My motor new from MMR did that and after I replaced the bearings (due to my fault on loose screw at the end of the pickup tube), I saw that same thing. When I rotated the crankshaft, it would snap up tension with a smack. I put it all together thinking once it had oil pressure, it would go away. Nope! I had to take the front cover off (chain was off a tooth and cam gears were retarded instead of advanced) changed my iron tension pistons for the plastic ones and swapped chains (thinking it was stretched a bit) and reassembled. Still there. It actually comes and goes too.

Changing from iron to plastic pensioners scared me at first.

If you turn the crank and watch the cams on that side, you'll see that there are spots where the chain is taught on one side and slack on the other where the crank isn't pulling the slack either. I think it has to do with the cam timing and cams. Mine never did it until I installed 98 Cobra cams. How are the guides? If they are worn at all, that will cause a little slack. How many miles on the engine? Chains stretch over time causing slack. All this together will cause that smack sound. Which can sound like piston slap or light rod knock if you don't know about it.

Probably a dumb question but is there any way one can check for worn chain guides or tentioners with out removing the front cover ?

On the DOHC 4.6L engines in the Marauder, I'm unaware of any other way to check w/ out removing the cover burt ragio. If I am mistaken, be sure that someone here will correct me. :)
