I've asked before but I didn't quite get the information I was looking for so I'm hoping someone here who is smarter about car stereos can help me.

I want to throw my factory sub in the trash and get an Infinity Basslink. I'm not interested in an aftermarket headunit. My question is, How do I wire this up? Can I use the wiring that the factory sub uses? I'd still like for it to run of the factory headunit's sub output. I don't think running it off the rear speakers would work very well. I remember someone saying you could do this, but when I went to my local electronics store, they told me that it couldn't be done; but they didn't actually look at how the factory sub was wired up.

I have a Basslink and am thinking about hooking it up. The guys at your your local store are mistaken. The Basslink has speaker level inputs(at least mine does) and line level inputs. It wouldn't be prudent to try and run the Basslink off the subwoofers amp output. But the input to the factory amp should have all we need to do the job. I should have the color codes for the input plug soon and we can go from there. If for some reason that isn't possible. We can use the rear speaker lines also with no trouble, I've done it in another vehicle.
My only concern would be that the power wire to the factory amp might not be sufficient to power the Basslink safely and we'd have to run a wire from the battery, but, that's not the end of the world either.

I just installed mine. It is designed to use line level hookups. That is how I have mine installed now and I had the same setup in my Mustang. It works well.
It you are going to get a new head unit you can run an RCA from teh head unit to the basslink if it has sub out. That would be even cleaner.

I also ran an 8 gauge power wire from the battery to the basslink. I then grounded the Basslink to the parcel tray. I would not use the factory wireing.

Jeff

Hmm. I'd go with some aftermarket wires and connectors just for better bass response, especially since the wires are going to need to push something so much larger. I've used Monster cable in the house and I don't get more bass, but I do get clearer bass. Get as low of an omh-age as the sub and unit can take (probably 4-8ohms). Doesn't the stock sub plug in via a clip that looks like it's more for a computer, while the aftermarket sub looks like a regular RCA connector?

Opps...I used speaker level inputs not line level. sorry! didnt read it before posting...

I'm afraid that there's possibly a cross over in the headunit of our factory system and the speakers don't get the low frequency's to run the Basslink off them. Am I right or wrong? If I'm wrong then I guess there would be no problem with running the Basslink of the speakers instead of trying to hook it up using the existing sub wiring. But if it's run of the speakers, wouldn't it be affected by the fader position?

Sorry, please bear with me. I'm a moron when it comes to this sort of stuff. Just trying to make an informed decision.

Thanks

I just installed a pair of Polk Momo's in the rear and Audiobahns in the front and disconnected the factory sub to listen to them. I have an 04 MM and based on this test I would say that there no crossover in the head unit(which would be pretty rare in an OEM unit any way). Yes, if we use the rear speaker wires as inputs to the Basslink it will be subject to fader control as it will only be getting a signal from the rear output of the head unit. My Basslink is an older one that doesn't have the remote gain control so this feature is an advantage to me and the instructions for the Basslink are very clear on how to use 2 inputs rather than 4. I am thinking about tapping into the OEM sub amplifiers input for the speaker level and remote turn on leads and running a wire for power thru the firewall.

Jeff, did you mount the Bass link to the rear parcel shelf with the controls facing down?

I am going to install one Infinity DVC 12" in the trunk, and if any one here can get the wiring diagram for the factory sub, this would help all of us. The signal being sent to the factory sub amp is most likely a full bandwidth signal, not crossed over. So this would provide a constant signal for an additional amp, that would not be affected by the fader (or DSP). The turn on lead can be used from the rear sub amp as well, but to run an additional amp with any great amount of wattage would not be recomended.
This is from my own experience, never installed radio systems professionally, but it was a hobby for quite a few years!
Good luck to all.
Any pics of installed systems would be great.

No they are face up. Would it be better to flip it over?

from a performance standpoint, no, I don't think it would make much of difference. Lower bass frequencies are pretty non-directional. But, how do access the adjustment controls for tweaking if they are face up?

There is plenty of room to adjust the controls if its face up. I have the controls and cooling fins facing the spare tire.

Well, I decided that I'm going to just trash the whole factory sound system. I'm gonna go with a Kenwood Excelon X879 head unit, X810 D sub amp, and 2 DVC 12 in XW1225DB Subs. I already installed Kenwood X988C speakers (6x8).
