I'm just copying and pasting a thread I already made on crownvic.net. I know you guys love panthers too, just a specific model, and I figured you guys would wanna join in the celebration too!

Well, I was trying to get a question answered in another thread, so I decided to make a thread to show where I'm at with my '99.

I went faster with a stock bottom end than I ever thought I would. I hoped for high 11s, and that's what happened. I broke some stuff, parted all the good stuff, and started buying chevy stuff. I traded my old nitrous kit for a TH400. I bought an old Suburban motor for $350. Cam, springs, intake, etc.

Ok, long story longer, I'll just post some pics. I'm not gonna try to make a super detailed first post because there's just too much stuff to try to remember that I either have done, or still have to do to make it all work. Feel free to offer input.

Yep. I already have the pump, injectors, rails, and filters, but the last of the fuel stuff comes in tomorrow. Then I gotta order megasquirt, and spend a couple full days wiring.

Me and my friend are gonna street tune it to get the AFs right. Then Play with the timing at the track until it doesn't pick up MPH.

I don't know if I said this already, but it will be on 15-16 lbs, E85, and a whole bunch of timing.
Street driven?Yep! Driven to and and from the local 8th mile, and when I drive 75 miles to Bowling Green, I'll just throw a couple of jugs of E85 in the trunk.

Car will have power steering, insurance, a tag, full interior, and radial tires. Basically a nice weather fun car.

5.3 or 6.0?

CameronVic
08-13-2012, 02:56 PM
5.3. Was initially thinking about a 6.0, but they're like twice as much around me, and I knew a 76mm wouldn't do a 6.0 the justice it deserved.

This one was $350! Came out of a 2000 suburban with 180K miles! The inside looked great, so lets see how long this 12 year old motor lasts!

LANDY
08-13-2012, 04:52 PM
The 5.3 is just fine. You should be able to make 550rwhp thru that hp robbing th400 and still be reliable. What cam did you go with?

You may allready know that a Mechanic out of Tennessee [I think ]-- transplanted a Ls2 [400 hp] engine from a Trail blazem SS to a sick Marauder. The hood closed ,used the trail Blazem intake and ROLLED out . Itz on U tube .It looks like your set up may kick the SS marauder off the track also the TH400 uses 28 horses to operate

What cam did you go with? With it being on E85, and the amount of boost I'm looking to throw at it (This is complete bench racing based just on what other people have done with similar builds), I'd like to see 650-700. But HP doesn't really even matter to me. If it goes mid to deep 10s, I'm going to be more than thrilled.

And the cam is just something a local 6.0 turbo guy sold me. He went mid 6s and high 10s, but he was just on pump gas, weighed more than me, and had a 4L80E with a dana 60 behind it (Talk about HP robbing!). I believe its like a 212 224 .550 lift with a 112 LSA, but don't quote me. LOL. Basically, it was $100, and someone had already proven what it could do. It was good enough for me!

And yes I did know that! I'm more than jealous! He sprayed his too didn't he?!

Also, I'm pretty sure a TH400 doesn't use a set amount of HP, it's a percentage. I wish all it used was 28HP. I got the thing for dirt cheap (my old nitrous kit), and pretty much the only thing that is as strong as (and maybe stronger) in near stock form is a C6. I'll trade HP robbing for reliability any day!

I am proud of you SON , Keep up the good work .[ You are Sharp ]
You are right about percentage, I got my round figure from a compilation of dyno runs at Allison trans center in Indianapolis for tested reading for the hydro 350 and 400 some years back for a Impala mule. the Allison supv gave me an average of HP loss ,I think the hydra 350 came in at 23-26 hp loss . Keep us posted on the Progress

Not to get too technical, but the percentage of loss decreases as horsepower increases. It is not a fixed percentage, nor is it a fixed rated horsepower. More on the order of 12.8% (400hp) to 12.1% (700hp).

I have two puller fans that I'm waiting to put on the back of the IC if I have high IATs. E85 will pretty much make higher IATs nothing to worry about though.

What is your setup that you had high IATs with? And what did you do to fix it?

2.0L twinscrew pushing 24psi into a 6cylinder 24x24 or so front mount snow meth injection 625ml jet. Was seeing about 170* iat. 100* ambient. I layed it horizontal on the bumper so it wasn't right up on the IC. I ussually see 140* iats now.

My intercooler is AA, the entrance and exit are on the same side. A buddy of mine had it on his 650whp sentra on 35psi and E85. I should be fine.

Looking forward to see what yours runs. Although I am not a fan of chevys in fords. Atleast its Vic. It is nice you can get those motors cheap. And its nice to see some hot rodding going on.

Just FYI, your regulator cannot be mounted on the firewall and must be 6 inches forward of the flywheel/flex-plate, regardless of the SFI shielding. That is, if you are going to race it and take it to an NHRA track, regardless of how fast it runs.

Otherwise, it looks nice.

I take it you've never exceeded the speed limit or done a rolling stop?

5 point harnesses are good for 2 years, and then they can NEVER be used in competition again, does that mean they won't keep my body in the car the day they turn 2 years and 1 day old?

More people are killed each year by lightning strikes than blow up bell housings on TH400s with my HP level. We take a risk everytime we get behind the wheel on the street or the track. Now quit jinxing me! Lol!
