:banana2:

I figure I have your attention with that title ... and hopefully I will get some real answers besides the jocularity ...

My differential is leaking. Before I rip it off to repair it, I have a few questions:

1. Is it a gasket or just silicone?
2. I recall somewhere that you should use something else with the gear oil. What is it?
3. Standard 90w gear oil? yeah or ney?

Thanks!

Where is it leaking? If its the cover use both silicone and a new gasket. Refill with gear oil that has friction modifier added like royal purple or pick up the modifier at your local ford dealer.

1. Stock gasket is paper or cork (can't remember). Not silicone. Replace with silicone when reinstalling.

2. Friction modifier. Use that or as stated by "Blackened300A" above, get some synthetic with modifier already added.

3. 75w140 (as per FBM).

Nice follow on to the Colonoscopy thread.

But I digress.

TWSS after a fun night (to the title of the thread lol)

There is no gasket besides a bead of black RTV silicone which should be used. Black RTV silicone is oil resistant. You want 75w-140 Motorcraft, Redline, Royal Purple or Mobil 1 "LS". For the Motorcraft you will need to buy a small bottle of friction modifier and you will need at least 3 quarts of fluid. With Redline, RP or Mobil 1 "LS" (stands for Limited Slip and has the friction modifier already in it) you don't need to buy additional FM.

Everybody has their own brand they like to use, I've been using Mobil 1 for the past 3-4 years in my rear axle with zero problems and can be easily found at any parts store.

Make sure that it is just the cover leaking. Runoff from a leaking pinion seal can travel rearwards.

As for fluids, +1 on Ctrlraven's post.

Be sure to follow the directions on applying the silicone. Usually have to wait while it "skins over" before reassembly.

+1000 on this. If you do it yourself let it sit and cure properly before proceeding. The shop that did mine didn't wait and it made a mess of my garage floor. Second time they waited and there have been no problems since.

Unfortunately it is the cover, not the breather tube, not he pinion seal ...

You can see the leak at about the 11:00 position on the cover.

As for doing it myself, not with three kids. It is going in for an oil change, general check up in a week or so, I will just have them do it. Figure an hour job ($75 hourly rate) plus silicone and fluids.

When I had mine serviced, I had the tech pull the axles to see how they were wearing (for piece of mind).
