Today I found a 1964 Monclair Marauder 2dr fastback with a 390, 3spd auto, 88K original miles, beige in color with black interior. No A/C, good floor pans, and trunk. The trim was a little battered and the paint a bit faded but the 1/4's and the majority of the underneath was pretty solid. The seats were pretty decent too.
He told me he drove the car from State College PA to NY and said it ran flawless. He was asking $7500 for the car and wouldn't go a penny under $7K. Is this a good deal for the car?

I passed up on one about 6 years ago in approximately the same shape but with more miles, guy was asking $4,500 and I passed it up (thought that was too much money at the time... :shake:).
The cars are rare, if the body's solid, prolly worth $7K.

$7K for a rust free driver isn't bad - not a bargan but could be worth a go. If the trim is SS it most likely can be straightened & repolished. Freshen everything else up and keep the budget under $13K and you got a real nice car for $20K or less!

I agree. $7k is not really that high if the mileage is accurate. Is everything there? Trim, etc can be hard to find. They can be hard to start after sitting a while. I have the same year and model so holler if you have questions. Will help if I can. You might see what Kirk thinks too.

If you don't mind me asking, where the heck are you putting all these cars?

Look hard at the brake pedal cover. Could give you a clue if the odo has rolled over once.

Have you checked with "Kirk" I believe is his screen name here? He is the King of info on the earlier Marauder's

I've been holding my tongue on this one. I hate "appraising" cars sight unseen. Just don't have enough to go on.
As with any car purchase, if YOU like it and YOU think it's worth the money, buy it. If not, don't.

I did all that. It appears to be a true 88k mile car. The underneath was under coated at one time which preserved the floor pans and the trunk. The frame was solid and everything seemed intact. I was thinking what it needed vs value. By the time I do the engine over, paint, body work, and the all the rest of the small details, I wonder if it would still be worth it.

In a project like this it has to be more of a labor of love vs. expense. If you bought it and fixed it up what would your plans be for it? If you are looking to turn a quick profit there are probably better things to put your money into but if you are looking to get your hands greasy and do some imaginative planning and execution perhaps a car like this could be just the ticket.
I have found over the years that if I listen to the little voice in the back of my head it is almost always right. What is that little voice telling you?...... no the other little voice w/o the boobs?;)

I would love to retro rod it by turning the 64 marauder into a 04 marauder by adding the black monochromatic theme, leather interior pieces, rims, and a DOHC power plant. That would be my vision for the car just a lot of money and time to invest into a project like that.

The little voice with the boobs supports any decision he makes. Its his money, I don't tell him how to spend it. As long as we can pay the bills, he can buy and do whatever he wants with cars :)
In regards to the car, when he said it was a 64 Marauder, I couldn't get outta my chair fast enough to take a look. My idea was (after restoration) to paint it flat black and lower it. Was a beautiful car.

How about taking the body off and putting it on a '03 - '04 Marauder chassis?
There is a guy who did that with an older Ford pickup..... said the PU body was an almost perfect fit.

I'd thought about the same thing a few years back, I think it would be way cool, the only thing I'd do different would be to keep the old FE engine, but maybe beef it up a bit with a cam (remember when cars only had one cam?....;)) and rumbly exhaust.

It looks like a solid car. There are a couple like it on ebay right now that are in the same ballpark. Both Montclairs.
