View Full Version : Oil Pressure Guage stuck

As the title says, my oil pressure guage (the one closest to the driver on the shifter bezel) is stuck. When I turn on the car, it goes from 0-75, and then just stays there until I shut it off. I know that the oil pressure isn't always at 75! Lol.

Anyone experience this with their car? Any idea as to what it could be? I was thinking maybe a faulty oil pressure switch. Should be easy enough to check at my shop, just thought I'd throw a post up here and see what comes back.

Thanks guys!

If it's the original gauge it isn't really giving you an accurate oil pressure indication, it is more like on or off.
You need the real autometer gauge and sender package, tee into your oil pressure switch and then you will see what your oil pressure is.
What you have now is just above an "Aim Me at a Junkyard Light"

Little secret! The factory oil pressure guage is a dummy like no worky, fake. Simply a look good piece it is not connected to anytype of oil sending unit just a power connection to make it move & lite up.

You still have the stock / fake op gauge.

Do yourself and your MM a favor and replace it with a real one.

Replacement Gauges – Autometer (2 1/16)
Oil Pressure – 4327 (comes with 2242 sending unit)
Voltmeter – 4391

I recommend you replace both gauges as they are slightly different than the OEM gauges.

it is not connected to anytype of oil sending unit just a power connection to make it move & lite up.For the sake of accuracy, that's not entirely true. There IS a pressure switch that closes at approximately 6 lbs, but other than that the gauge is essentially useless.

Your motor is shot.

I will give you $1,500 for the car as it sits.

True but if you wanna rely on that by the time it would show a problem are you gonna have a motor left?? Hence my point for saying it that way, IMO it is useless:beer:

Is it possible to just buy the sender unit, and hook up the stock gauge to read properly?

No. You need the sender AND the new gauge.

Ratfarts! Beat me to it, and outbid me by $1,492 as well.... ;) =------> :D

It's not a functional gauge, in reality it's more or less just a glorified idiot light. The current gauge doesn't "sense" anything, it's pretty much just on or off; anything over 6 lbs pressure it will read in the operational range. Below that, it will indicate "low", but at hat point the motor will be toast.

Unfortunately, Ford had AutoMeter build both the sender (really an on-off switch) and the gauge unit to Ford's spec, which has for decades been to indicate that everything is just peachy all the time and not actually give a true reading ever...the explanation is some malarkey about reducing the number of warranty service issues because most people don't understand that an oil pressure gauge is SUPPOSED to go up and down as temperature and RPM change. In Ford's defence, the modular motors really DO have a very wide pressure range between a cold start (near 100 lbs) and hot idle in gear (25 lbs), so this may freak out those who don't understand.

There's a write-up somewhere on here that explains how to swap the faces from the factory gauge to the AutoMeter properly-working replacement to maintain the factory look, but it's kinda fiddly and the replacement Pro-Comp gauge face is so close that most people don't bother.

Actually, it will *begin* to indicate low - it takes a while for the needle within the gauge to actually move. Iirc, you can get a good idea of how long when you shut the engine off (or is it just before starting it up again - I forget) - watch the needle move from 75 to zero... that's how long it'll take.

I suppose if you notice it anywhere between normal (ie 75) and zero with the engine running - it'd be prudent to shut off the engine.

You should replace both gauges.

If you changed one gauge it will be visibly different from the other OEM gauge.

Not if your factory guage lights don't work at night.

True... It's easy to replace the light bulbs. I'd suggest going with green LEDs instead of the incandescent bulbs.

The lights work in my gauges and no one has ever mentioned the oil pressure and volt meter don't match & I surely don't care...

These also come in 270 degree sweep, which, imho, gives you more gauge action goodness :)
