View Full Version : Body shop put miles on car....

Got my car back from the body shop today. They did a fine job on a front end respray. One defect I'll have to get addressed though.

Problem is, they put 175 miles on the car in the process. I'm wondering what recourse I have against them. Any advice is appreciated.

U mean to tell me they drove a half a tank out your car.

175? Dam I'd say to never go there again?

I remember having half a tank when I dropped it off. That's what it still has. But I ALWAYS reset the trip meter when I fill up. It now reads 386.

They noted the miles in, but conveniently did not note the miles out.

20 or so miles for test drive(s) could be expected but 175 - no way.

Contact mgr, tell them to justify the miles driven & if can't you want compensation for mileage - use IRS mileage allowances to calculate.

OR

If you like the work done and want to be a return customer, say nothing. But next time make sure in & out miles recorded and when dropped off make statement of "please, no joy-riding with car this time".

About all you can do.

My brother-in-law was recently telling me about his built 5.0 LX pony that he used to race when he was living in San Antonio. He had left it at a pro shop for some work done on it and literally saw one of the mechanics street racing by him in his truck hours later! He went back to the shop and got his car back. He said they fired the mechanic, but, who knows.

Go climb up someone's a$$, they did a respray, no reason to drive the car.

I had a LM Stealership put 190 miles on a brand new 98 Mark 8 that was in for service while I was out of state. It had 1200 miles on it when I dropped off and 1398 when I picked it up.
They also painted it, seeing as how they wiped the passenger side off of the car.

The car should have been totaled. I ended up filing lemon law on it, then they tried to blame me for wrecking it.
Sad thing is that was the 6th car I bought from them.

^^ Holy crap. That's amazing.

Sorry about that Tbone. I feel your pain. Damn, I mean I wouldn't care so much if it wasn't a good car, but still that is insane. You just know they were pounding on it too.

When I took my car to the dealer I did a reflash with my SCT device. lowered timing, made the shifts soft and set the speed limiter at 60 MPH. Then I told the guy doing the work no "ferris buler" please. This was at my local trusted Ford Dealer.

So there's a good tip for you next time. I was having an alignment done so they HAD to drive it after to make sure all was well but 10 or 15 MPH tops on the speed limiter should be PLENTY for a body shop to move the MM around their shop/parking lot.

This is why I had a valet tune. Rpms set to 1500 and top speed limited to 30mph. Now I just don't trust anyone to move the car.
Probably nothing can be done but I would absolutely raise hell and create a scene in front of the other customers.

I always get the mileage written down most of the time (99%) I know the shop and do not have to worry about it.

175 miles is a lot of miles I would just ask them to account for the miles.

Go from there...........

What does the valet key limit the car to? And I'd be beyond pissed, for a paint job it should have .1 miles on it TOPS... pulling into bay, pulling out of bay and then parked.

Valet key limits access to the 4 doors.
It cannot unlock the trunk switch or the glove box.
That's it.

I would say go back and talk to the management, demand to talk to the tech along with the manager. If you get no decent results being diplomatic...rip someone a new ass!

Hey wait a minute is the marauder already equip for a valet key? Is it a special key or any old PATS key set to that role??

TIA.

Nevermind just reread Blackened's post. Do you carry an SCT and just reprogram it on the spot?

This is what the better business bureau is for! if you have documented proof file a claim.

The bbb won't do a thing. If you really have a dispute contact the Attorney General of your state.

Not in North Carolina....... how can they? The bbb and SAG are 2 different entities.... They are not connected in anyway. Believe me I've been through this.

The bbb will take the complaint, if it's resolved it will disappear from their books....

The SAG will keep the complaint on file forever, regardless of the outcome.

I went there earlier today. They claim they did not drive it at all, but could not explain the discrepancy. There's a spot I want them to fix so I did not make a huge scene over it. What can you do? Not a damn thing and they know it.

Maybe they drove the car 175 miles just to dry the paint quicker?

WannaMM I will pick you up. Two southern boys, they will not understand what hit them.
When I first got Black (03) I took it in for service and one of the mechanics said to another one. "I can't wait to wring that car out" I went to the owner and told him about it and the guy was fired. I then took my MM to another shop.

When you bring it back to get more work done to it ,I would wait for it there if possible or park across the street in a friends car and wait for them to take it for a joy ride and rip them a new hole !
