Hey Everyone,

So recently I have been considering getting an oil catch can for the MM to help with the oil blow by. I noticed when I purchased the car last year that there was an unbelievable amount of oil in the intake...

I have also started having more blue smoke startups it seems (not often, but say 1 a month) which I was thinking may be related?

However I have a few questions before I spend the money...
I know I need to take the intake off and clean it and the throttle body, but once I clean it all up, I need to keep it from getting that way again.

It seems there are alot of options out there, Sparta, JLT, Reinhart, MuscleMerc, etc....

I know asking which is best seems to be like asking what oil to use, but I would like to get feedback as to what you have installed, is there any oil in the intake after installation, and any noticeable differences after install?

I also see some just throwing breathers on the valve covers and saying its just as good...though I know MuscleMerc stated that you need a baffled catch can to do anything...

Thanks for everyones .02

Did you pull off the lower intake manifold and upper intake lid to clean those as well?

I had made my own but kept having problems with the hoses and draining it. Bought a MuscleMerc because the fit and finish of it was great and draining the oil was pretty easy. Problem with the MM oil catch can is that intake port sits above the output port which can allow oil to be sucked up. I have seen oil in my output hose to the uppder intake lid and seen oil in my intake manifold when I pulled the lid off, not to happy about that.

So I say Sparta or JLT, either one will work for ya.

I haven't pulled off the upper yet, only the throttle body. I do plan to pull the upper off to clean it...boy will that be a job (took me almost an hour to get the butterfly clean scrubbing, because there was soo much).

Good to know about the musclemerc can.

I would remove the lower intake manifold as well since that will be the area with the most build up. I used a crap load of B52 Chemclean carb cleaner spray and brake cleaner.

Here is the thread I made when I cleaned mine, you can see a before and after picture of the lower intake manifold.

I had considered that as well, am just hesitant as removing it is digging more into a motor than I have before...

A lot of Mustang guys are seeing great results with an oil separator from Bob's. I think it's available in kit form for Mustangs, but the maker (Bob?) also sells just the can itself, and can also customize the fittings you need.
I don't own one, nor do I know Bob.

I saw that thread as well and that's a proper designed catch can. I had planned on buying several of them to run on my new 5.0 stroker motor.

Any benefit to the Bob's can vs Sparta? They look very similar to me, and the sparta one should be plumbed to the marauder already... I like the JLT one looks wise, but the guys on the mustang forum didn't have much good to say about it, function wise. I like the 42draft also but can't see spending $200 plus for it :(

I'll say this about them. My buddy who owns a speed shop took one of my 42 Draft Design cans apart, in his words "I don't know how they can manufacture this and sell it for less than $300", it is very well built.

I care about all that junk in my motor, the cost of 2 cans and the plumbing is way cheaper than another motor.

What ever choice you make, will be better than what you have on the car right now.

I have one of those JLT things if you want it. PM me.

My catch can fits nicely on the Marauder, that was it's intent. The Bob's can looks good but I don't know if that bracket is removable, mine is very compact. The reason why the Stang guys don't have anything nice to say about JLT is because it doesn't work well. I installed a JLT on a customers GT-500 and 2 days later there still was a decent amount of oil in the output side of the PCV hose and according to JLT when we called they stated it was normal. This is why I didn't do a volume buy from them.

I'm working on a 42 Draft Designs stealth catch can for the MM. Will have steel lines that will not collapse. Will also have mounting bracket, hardware & a petcock to drain it.

Trying to keep it under or at $200.00

I was surprised to find that Moroso also makes what appears to be a very functional catch can as well. It looks similar to the Bob's cc, is baffled differently but filters in a similar fashion, and is available in a variety of mounting options.

I'm using Firefox 14.0.1, and I can't see the enlarged photo of your offering on your website. Also, how come you only have 1 photo of what appears to be an installed unit? How about a few more pics of the kit, the internals, etc.

P.S. The enlarged pic doesn't show up in IE 8.0 either.

P.P.S. I can see the pic if I right-click and pic 'show image'.

I put the JLT on the passenger side and a JLT pre filter on the DS.
I am sure there are better products out there and I am following this thread as well. I have to say I am amazed at what it catches.
After I pulled the SC last year for Posi Porting I was amazed at how much oil was in the intake and decided I wasn't going to put it back together without something.

Although I hear the Methanol I am spraying does a terrific job of keeping things clean downstream.

Logically Bob's Auto Sports oil catch can is correct, intake side towards the middle low end of the can with the exhaust port high up to ensure oil isn't making it's way up there.

The only downside I can see with it is 1. having to drain it more often and 2. the petcook could leak. I will be ordering one sometime soon.

Is the Oil Catch Can still a good mod? What are everyone's thoughts? Is Musclemerc still making one?
