View Full Version : scary moment last night

I changed my oil last night pretty late, I let the car run for 10 after as I normally do to ensure nothing is leaking.
I was about 3 miles from my house after changing the oil and all was good, I opened it up to half throttle and in an instant, had smoke everywhere. I immediately let off to idle and pulled into a Lowe's lot less than 1/4 mile away and shut it off. As soon as I got out of the car I noticed a trail of oil on the ground. I also heard a slurping sound and oil dumping out of the filter area. Until help arrived with a replacent filter and my ramps, I lost a total of 4 1/2 quarts (a puddle two feet wide by five feet long).
I turns out that the old filter's gasket got stuck, I don't know how I missed it and I normally look for it, but I just missed it this time. It didn't come loose when I cleaned the mating surface and I didn't feel it through the rag.
I'm just happy I caught it right when it blew out. I doubled back to see where the oil first hit the road and it was only 100 feet from where I saw the smoke..... needless to say I got lucky.

Very glad it worked out well. That is almost as bad as the time I forgot to torque the lugnuts and the tire fell off at the stop sign.

Guys I totally agree I got L-U-C-K-Y, LUCKY!!!! I'm not new to changing oil in these cars. I do it religiously every 3000 miles and I've driven about 200K between the 3 I've owned, so that about 66 oil changes. It could have easily been a $7000 mistake

I glanced at the oil pressure gauge right when it happened, I know it's fake, but I felt the need to look.
I'm now renaming it the Chip Diller gauge:

Glad it worked out for you. Have seen some that didn't end well.
You always look at the old filter to see if the gasket is on it....... and always clean the gasket surface on the block..... always........

MMMmmm....this thread is very interesting indeed...I wonder if this may be the reason why my engine blew in my '81 Escort back in '92 (only had 75k on it). I'll never know because I bought a Prelude to replace it and let the scorty sit for 4 months, then sold it to a friend for $300 that wanted to take a crack at fixing it. He cussed me out a week later when he started working on it....

Same thing happened to Zack at MV3 (or was it 4?) in Florida. We pushed his car to a mall parking lot that just happened to have a K-Mart where he bought 4 quarts of M1. Anyone who knows Zack knows he doesn't drive like Grandma and his motor lasted a good long time after that...

I was always told to watch for the gasket sticking to the block, but never had it happen on any car except the Marauder, and it's done it twice to me (and yes, I always lube the new one w/ oil).

Crazy, but it happens.
I was doing some tire/wheel swap work once on my 68 Merc Cyclone GT fastback.
I worked on one side, my buddy did the other side.
My wife and I drove from north Jersey all the way into Pa before we started hearing a clunking sound from the right front wheel (my buddy's side).
The lugs had spun loose.
Tightened them up. All was fine.

All I can say is it is a good thing that smoke drew your attention to the issue otherwise I think you would have been in big trouble.
