View Full Version : Strange sensation when wipers are on

O.K., this is the strangest gremlin I've had in a car in a long time....

When I have the wipers in any of the DELAY mode settings, just as they BEGIN their sweep across the window, I can feel a slight sensation in the brake and gas pedal coming through my right foot.

This happens right when the relay activates the wiper motor and the initial wiper sweep begins..(only in the DELAY mode)

Now, I've read on here somewhere, that the wiper motor is located way down low somewhere near the firewall on the driver side. btw- I've played with the pedal adjustment and there was no change.

This is really starting to annoy me and actually startled me once at a stop light. The problem is not dangerous, but kinda freaks me out now and then when I get the sensation.

Could the alternator be a possible cause..creating a surge through the electric pedal adjustment system?

Oh BTW.. I just ordered the ROH Fury wheel.. I'll post a pic when I get them on. I've had the car less than a week and I'm already tired of keeping those chrome rims looking good. Kudos to those who are more dedicated than myself at cosmetic care! So I guess this means Ill have 4 almost new stock rims for sale soon... hint hint hint.

These ROH wheels, do they have the correct offset? 50mm I believe. We have yet to find any manufacturer that does. They may stick out from the wheel wells if not. You've seen those kids with deep dish wheels on the wrong cars haven't you? Not a pretty sight, and the road rash becomes an issue as well.
As far as the stock wheels, don't sell them too quick. Just in case.

I am still excited to see them, not too many folks have done it.

As far as the wipers....wierd. Sounds like a great warranty item.:D

49mm offset for the ROH Fury wheels..and thanks for the concern.
Maybe I will quit my job and go work for Pizza Hut as a delivery driver if this doesnt work out.

I sure enjoy how everyone looks out for each other on here!

I remember that wheel now, looks amizingly similar to what we have now.

No, Cruztaker, I was being serious.. I appreciate you watching my back.
It's much appreciated and thank you.

btw-I found the wheel comes in a color called "black ice".. I ordered both silver and black ice to see which I liked best (I know, I'm a mess) LOL!!

Attached is the "Black Ice" ..ice ice baby! (Whoops, just dated myself!!)

Attached is the "Black Ice" ..ice ice baby! (Whoops, just dated myself!!)OK, the Black Ice rocks!!! That kinda justifies the similarities. When I redid my wheels, I really wanted to have them black anodized. But after many a vendor 'watching my back' as well, they all talked me out of it. The cost was actually quite reasonable at about $150 a wheel, it was the durability over time that was the primary concern. Therefore I went with powdercoat, and after screwing with test colors, I ended up with this:

The cost of this project was far more than expected to the tune of nearly $1100! The only good point is that when I have my spare set widened this summer, atleast I'll be able to make my race wheels match.

I feel the same thing in my pedals also. Figured it was normal.

Recall that the wiper motors are fixed to the firewall... while yours may be loose, I think it's normal to feel some 'feedback' through the firewall (and consequently the pedals). Perhaps they forgot some isolators or bushings during assembly?

If you do a search, this was discussed like 9-10 months ago. Unfortunately, it was not a poll, or it would have resurfaced this week for sure...

I do believe pedal feed back when you have the wipers on is normal.
I haven't noticed it as much in my MM, but I did feel it alot in my 1990 mustang.

Although this is an old thread it did catch my interest because my 2004 MM is only 5 days old with only 200 miles and had its first use of wipers today in Northern VA. I felt the movement in both pedals also and could not wait to get home to see if something was written here about it. I have never had a car do that nor have I ever heard of it before. It is real annoying none the less.

Has anybody contacted Mercury / Ford to see what they had to say? I won't waste my time if they said it was normal...although not normal to me.
