I put a new filter and ofcourse fluid in my tranny..When I left the garage the level was good.Next time I checked, about a week later,it was low.I added almost a quart of fluid and now you guessed it,it reads over full.Looks like about a quart too much.Is this a problem? Will it hurt the tranny?ruin seals or what not or no biggie??If I need to take some fluid out, what's the best way without dropping the pan again and replacing all the fluid?Siphon maybe,if I can find one with a long enough hose..when the filter was replaced I think they put 6 quarts of MerconV...And no I don't have a plug in the pan.Meant to get a new pan but, this is the first trans filter and fluid change since the car was new...Should I just drive it,drives and shifts perfectly or should I attempt to siphon a quart out???Thanks...bugsy....:help:

It's most likely not an issue, unless you get the transmission REALLY hot by towing something big or doing a lot of brake-stands.

Because I'm A/R, I would siphon it out...

Not to say "I told you so", but this is why adding a $7 drain plug is a good idea...

And if you had a simple pan-drop and filter replacement, they put too much in. it only take a little over 4 quarts with filter, not 6.

Second the motion just siphon out what's needed.

There are 2 hoses underneath the car, one of them you can disconnect and fluid will come out when you start the car. they are on the passenger side front and they seem to run over top of the sway bar. they both have hose clamps going to them, connecting them to metal tubing....the tubing runs over the sway bar and the hose clamps are a few inchs from that.

Thanks guys.As I said I didn't put the drain plug in because in 70,000 miles this is the first filter change. My mistake,I should have..Going to try find those hoses..I guess they're going to trans cooler?

Which one do I disconnect?Right or left, top or bottom or both???A picture would be great if possible

Be careful... you might burnout the pump if you take too much out.

I'd just loosen the tranny pan and let some drain out.

I can't remember which hose to pull, but try pulling 1 off, if fluid comes out great it should only take 2 seconds maybe for a quart, if not, reattach the hose and pull the off the other 1. i did this to drain the pan before dropping the pan to change my filter. I bought a drain plug from auto zone for around $3, just tell the guy at the counter, what you're trying to do, and they should be able to help you out.

dont laugh now, my paint skills leave much to be desired....both pictures were taken from the passenger front, just past the wheel

red is the sway bar
green are some pulleys
yellow are the trans lines, the circle/triangle(lol) are the clips to remove.

the other photo is the trans pan drain plug, its basically a bolt with a tapped hole in it, the bolt's nut goes on the inside of the pan, and the tapped hole has another bolt that goes into it that serves as your plug.

The hash marks on a tranny dipstick represent pints not quarts, unlike a engine dipstick hash marks that represent quarts.

Always check the transmission fluid after the trans has been brought up to normal temp, park on a level surface and let the vehicle idle for 5-10 mins. This will give you the most accurate reading.

thanks guys.I siphoned it out through dipstick tube

question when i check the trans fluid, the mm should be at norm temp. Do you have to shift the car in all grears before you check the level. And does the car have to be on?

Trans should be at operating temp, parked on level ground, engine running, anywhere from the lower part of the marks to the middle of the marks is good!

Level surface

Run it thru all the gears

Operating temp

Do you check your motor oil when running? Engine off.

Or if you want it directly out of the workshop manual:

Fill the transmission.
Start the engine. Move the transmission range selector lever through all the gear ranges, checking for engagements.
With the engine running and the transmission at normal operating temperature 66-77°C (150-170°F), check and adjust the transmission fluid level, and check for any leaks. If fluid is needed, add fluid in increments of 0.24-liter (0.5-pint) until the correct level is achieved (fluid should be in the cross-hatched area of the fluid level indicator).

Engine running to check trans fluid.

Ya know guys I'd talk to several trannie guys before I'd take it out, I know on the GN's we all ran with an extra quart in our tran's as under hard excell the fluid would pile up on the back of the pan and sometimes starve the trans. It never was a problem with them (extra oil) but not sure about the weak ford trans, maybe they can't take it! So I check around!

My mistake.

The 4R70W has a little well in the bottom of the pan that was put there specifically to prevent this. The filter has a small snorkel on the intake that sits down in the well.

My trans guy said you can run it with excess fluid up to about a quart over but you run the risk of burping some out the dipstick tube when it's HOT......messy but won't hurt anything since it does not pressurize the transmission!!

I've always vacuumed some out if I get to much in it to be safe.......you did the right thing for peace of mind and less mess!!
