I'm trying to understand the point of the dead pedal? Is it just somewhere to rest your left foot?

Correct.....................

Seems a bunch of members rave about it... why is it so awesome? I mean there is ample space to stretch your left leg out.

I'm just trying to hear some testimonials. I think I would benefit from this due to a bum ankle I have. My ankle always feels stiff when getting out of the Marauder.

So basically, what are the pros to having the dead pedal?

Support for your left foot when cornering hard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_pedal

NOTE: some of the following relates to a right-hand drive vehicle.

"The Dead Pedal
The dead pedal is located to the left of a vehicle's pedal assembly. In a race car, the dead pedal is often an actual pedal that is "dead" in that it does not control any operation such as braking or accelerating. In many factory vehicles, the dead pedal is simply a raised area on the floor (or side of the floor) sometimes covered with a rubber slip mat.

The dead pedal is used by your left foot and accomplishes a number of things. First, it acts as a foot rest for your left foot when you're not using it. Second, because the area is raised, there is less movement required for your foot to go from dead pedal to clutch. In racing, this gains you valuable seconds and helps prevent the driver from placing their foot incorrectly on the gear assembly. Third, the dead pedal acts as support for your body under heavy braking, e.g. threshold braking during a race or emergency braking on the street. In these cases, your left foot braces against the dead pedal and prevents your body from sliding down in the seat (very helpful in a street car without racing harnesses!) Most importantly, this allows you more control over the brake pedal.

The dead pedal also helps prevent people from bracing their right foot in the wrong place during an emergency. Yes, believe it or not, many people will brace themselves by placing their right foot good and hard on the GAS pedal -- oops! Many times, when impact seems imminent, the brain says to the body "brace for impact dude!!" and freezes up. Sometimes, however, this freeze up happens when your foot is on the gas pedal. While the brain might have had good intentions, it certainly doesn't help accelerating into a crash! What the dead pedal does in these situations is allow the body to brace against something solid thus freeing the right foot to brake or accelerate away from a collision."

For me; it's two things.
1. Having my feet at "equal" distances, is much more comfortable;
2. (As Jim stated also) Whdn cornering, you can really press super hard into Ron's pedal, and support yourself.

Until you have one; maybe you won't realize. But after...you won't live without it.

GET ONE!

No, when your engine dies while you are in the vehicle you can pedal it like Fred Flintstone.;)

Sounds good. I think I'll inquire about one. Maybe two, since it would be nice in the GM with the clutch.

It is the best mod for the MM, because I use it everytime I drive it.

Get what makes you happy in the end "Mw 2309".
But from experience (and all the above members); Ron's pedal is THE BEST hands down.
Just a side: if you should go with anything else; NEVER MOUNT TO JUST THE PLASTIC KICK PANEL. It's really pretty useless mounted like that.

I will say it has helped my knee pain for whatever reason. I would get a fair bit of side knee pain pressure when driving without it, I guess because my foot/leg was unsupported? Now not so much.

I thought the same thing. It simply is just a place to rest your foot, but it really makes driving the car a lot more comfortable..For the money and the fact you can install it in 20m makes it one of the best mods you can make on your MM..Do it !!!!!

The pedal in GDMOE's reply has a metal bracket behind the plastic. That dead pedal is the reason I developed mine. I thought it looked a little to much like an afterthought. Plus the Mustang pedal it's based on flexes a lot and also I hate drilling holes in my trim pieces.

BTW I have an F150 design too but I'm not ready to take it prime time.

BigCars4Ever - The pedal in GDMOE's reply has a metal bracket behind the plastic.
-CORRECT- As noted the bracket is mounted under and uses the 2 bolts that hold the emergency/parking brake cable bracket to the cabin sheet metal.

Hey ... If it's good enough for Kenny Brown (and his Panthers and Marauders) it's good enough.

BTW ... In the 26years that I've installed the http://www.gdmjoe.com/fordmotorsport.jpg dead pedal (part # M-61120-A *obsolete*) NOT one of them ever flexed. Perchance it was your mounting surface that you had it bolted-to that was the issue.

If you do a lot of long distance driving, the dead pedal is a must. All it takes is driving a car with one as opposed to yours and you will be sold.

Love my BigCars4Ever one.

I just purchased my fourth dead pedal. I will eventually have one in all my cars. Do not like driving without one.
