Just venting a little bit, the rear axle TSB 03-05-55 that lets us here on the board know of the problem, this information won't get you very far at the dealership, so when you take your car in to have the dealer check it, unless the bearings are making the marbling sound or the axle appears to be ready to fall off they won't take the issue any farther. So use the TSB information only as a watch dog for your car and if you hear noise get it in ASAP so the pinion and ring gear are not damaged as well. Kelly :bounce:

I told my service manger about this and he came up empty. Even did an Oasis report and nothing. So if it is silent it is very silent :depress: Called him back to double check the numbers and had his boss check it, still nothing. What gives??
So far no noise from the rear axle. The only noise I get is a high pitch Whistle from the engine. Any ideas where it's coming from Rich? Oh yea, one more thing. GO YANKEES

Here is the TSB: Note it does not say Marauder on it because they consider it a Grand Marquis.

Well no wonder they could not find anything under my Vin, my build date is after 1/1/03. Thanks Carfixer, I'll still print it out for future reference.

They did a "check". Said they found nothing. But it is on my service record now.
I certainly do plan on a girdle when the 4:10's go in.

This also isn't a "silent or secret recall" as BON labels it.
it is a service notification to dealerships that such a problem is recognised as affecting certain vehicles, and it outlines the procedure to take to correct it. Not every vehicle built in that time frame has the suspect parts.

Like any automobile manufacturer they will try to get away with as much as possible till the warranty runs out.

In fairness I have to say that when Susan's 300A started whining proportional to speed it got so bad you could hardly hear inside the car we took it to dealer. They took it in with no hassle. Called later and said ti was the axle and ordered it. Was on backorder for about a week, but they got it overnighted in when it was available and put it the same day they recevied it. After that repair the TractionLoc was chattering on turns, so took it back and they replaced the entire differential carrier. I have heard of others putting their cars in with rear end noise and getting new axles without difficulty. If there is no noise there is no reason to take it apart, unless the dealer wants to eat the service time. However, be prepared to see axle wear when you do your gears. Then you may have to get new axles.

A TSB is not a recall. It is for imformation only. It let's the dealer know of a possible problem so if he gets a car with this symptom to look at the axles. Not all cars have the problem. Just like the TSB says, SOME cars built before 1/03/03. An engineer told me there were a batch of axles that weren't hardened properly. This does not mean all axles are bad just one batch. I don't know how many were in the batch but we have done about a dozen in my dealership. If yours are bad, believe me, you will know. It looks like someone took a hack saw to them. If it's going to happen, it will happen in the first 10-20 thousand miles, so as far as them going when the car is out of warranty are slim. A dealer can't fix something that isn't broken. They aren't just going to put axles in a car because of a TSB. Stop crying, noone is trying to hide of screw anyone. You sound like a bunch of children!!! RAY
