I've been looking for posts on how to Buff/Polish the inside of MM rims with no success.

Anyone know what they're made of and what brings up the shine on them?

Thanks,

Mark

ive tried, and to make them look half decent, I think it takes way too much effort. I'm really considering painting the inside black.

With 10 years of brake dust, road tar and heat you would be better off painting them. Duplicolor makes a wheel paint that worked out well for me. I used the silver with a clearcoat. Wheels turned out well and looked good when completed. Don't forget to use a wax or sealant when the paint has cured.

The Marauder wheels are polished aluminum with a clear coat over them. You polish them like any clear coat product..

The inside of the rim behind the spokes is a machined finish - like brushed only a little rougher. If it ever had any clear coat it wasn't very thick. You can use any aluminum polish on the inside w/a buff pad to bring it up to factory new but don't use this on the front side unless you are looking to refinish them!!

The inside is also aluminum?

With the rust, I didn't think so.

The rust is from the brake rotors

Next time you buy brake rotors get zinc washed ones or other coated ones to slow down the rusting issue on the rotor..The zinc wash/coatings are on the "hat" area and in the vanes area and not really on the braking surface. It won;t stop it forever especially if you drive it thru winter/salt etc.

Mine were pretty hurt when I bought the car, i used good old fashioned steel wool, started with medium and ended with with xtra fine using CRC 6-56 as a lube.
With the widened rears it seemed the only to make them look uniform anyway.

Then I washed them with soap and water and used Poorboys World Wheel Sealant.
4 years later they still look great, once a year I pull the wheels, clean them and seal them up again.

This is why I clean the inside of my rims at least once a month!

Mine look brand new! I just wipe them down with a towel.

Especially after the wilwoods went on! Those things make alot of brake dust!

use a wire wheel on a drill. should be able to smooth them down enough to start the polishing process.

I hope that is not a serious response.........

The wheels are clearcoated, want to take it off.... aircraft stripper will take it right off, then you can polish till you hearts content.

Keep in mind, there is a specific process for re-applying clear to polished aluminum, it is not cheap (for the materials), I have done a set of wheels already, and can tell you that you will be looking right at $500 for the materials.

I just use steel wool and Simple Green once a year to clean the backside of the rims. Then I just periodically just wipe the backsides a few times during the year. Looks pretty good.

the inside on the wheel isnt clear coated.

Maybe yours aren't, but factory wheels are, I just stripped, re-polished and refinished 4, they all had clear on the inside, if they didn't have anything to protect them, they would oxidize.
