Could I use 2 1/4 exaust tubing with exaust strap clamps to replace it? does the tubing need to be bent or is it a straight shot?

The tubing will need to be bent. I'll see if I can find a pic of mine and post it up.

If I remember correctly; I don't think you can just cut them out, and throw in a piece of pipe. The "in" on the cat is a different size than the "out". The bottom pic may reveal this.
You can see in mine, that it's 2 1/4" all the way through. It's definately not that diameter stock.
Maybe these will help alittle:

My deletes were a straight shot. No bending necessary.

Mine needed a bend because the tech cut directly in front of the cat and then directly in front of the factory flange to the mid-pipe.

ok, so i just went out to my car and measured the OD of the exhaust from right before the 2nd cat, to the weld right after the cat, its a straight shot. here's what i came up with
IN=7 1/2" circumference= 7.5"= 2.387" diameter= which is roughly 2 3/8"
OUT=6 5/8" circumference= 6.625"= 2.108" diameter= which is roughly 2 1/8"
makes sense because many say its not a true 2 1/4" exhaust, which is true.
however between the 2 measurements, there is a 1/4" difference, which leads me to think if i bought a piece of 2 1/4" OD exhaust pipe, i could use 2 1/4" butt to butt sleeves.
would the 2 1/4" sleeves have a little bit of play in them...like an 1/8" so i could have a decent seal between the two differently sized pipes, 2 1/4" to 2 3/8" and 2 1/4" to 2 1/8"? thanks guys.......btw, went to another mechanic down the street and he quoted me $150, same as the first....i think ~$50 in parts and do-it-youself outlook sounds better, im a cheapass when im laid off

I was just talking with the owner of our local hot rod exhaust shop in Austin...a gearhead himself who has been in the biz some 30 years...about taking the second set of cats of my '04 DRT...he asked me if that would cause the CEL (check engine light) to come on...and I told him I did not think so since there were no sensors in them...am I correct in saying that..and should I go ahead and have it done?
I also am in for a set of the 4" res delete megs tips if we have enough orders to generate another run...the two things are all I can afford to do now.
Hope to go the SW exhaust system another time.

Check engine light will not come on because the 2nd o2 sensor is between the 2 cats...not after the 2nd cat.

When I did mine a few years ago, I just used an electricians flexible drill bit with a 1" auger on it. That tore all the ceramic right apart then I used a metal coat hanger to get the wire screen that surrounds the ceramic out. No cutting, no welding, no 2nd cats!

I did that on a '90 Mustang 5.0 I had and the empty cats rang like a friggin' BELL when I accelerated.......NOT GOOD!!:shake: :argue:
What is the point of takin' the cats off......no power gain so is it just more noise??

Yes on the noise. It gives it a deeper and louder sound. No bell ringing btw. I've upgaded my exhaust since though. ;)

it seems that nobody knows for sure about it adding hp, but ctrlraven claims it took a tenth off his 1/4mile time....understanding that it could be many factors that did this, not just the cats removed, such as temp/octane/tires/etc. however, one thing is for certain, if its not serving a purpose being on there(purposeful for me, not so much the emissions), why have them? ive read up that hollowing out the cats could be detrimental, due to having a void/pocket that the exhaust gasses have no forced direction to go anymore forming kind of like turbulance in the exhaust gasses escaping. my guess is that ford put on the second set of cats to keep the EPA happy with its exhaust gasses output, considering if they really aren't needed, they wouldn't have spent the money to do so.
now that i have been:hijack:, does anybody know if the exaust sleeve clamps have enough play in them to seal up a 1/8" difference in pipe sizes?

ive read up that hollowing out the cats could be detrimental, due to having a void/pocket that the exhaust gasses have no forced direction to go anymore forming kind of like turbulance in the exhaust gasses escaping.
Let's say you're idling @ 800 rpms. Divide that by half to get exhaust stroke rpm (crank rotates twice for full stroke). 400 x 8 (cylinders) gives you 3,200 exhaust pulses/minute, divide by 60 to get 53.3 pulses/sec, divide by two (two banks) and you get 26.6 pulses/sec going through each exhaust pipe. I wouldn't worry about turbulence, etc. At wot... hehehe!
whitey
10-25-2012, 04:15 PM
Yes, 26.6....but the turbulance is making it more difficult for each stroke to get out, without getting hammered from the last stroke bouncing back since once it enters the hollowed cat, it has no more guidance. Think of it like this... Put a straw in your mouth and blow through it, then stick the straw in the side of a box, with another straw sticking out the opposite side. When you blow threw the straw now, that same breath will not come out the other end because it will fill the box, although air will blow out, it will become trapped first......now stop blowing the straw :)

YES!!;)
Just messin' whitcha..........the clamps will take the gap up well and to ensure a good seal I use Hi-Temp RTV Silicone with excellent results!! I also use the silicone instead of a gasket on my Cobra at the collector flange where the side pipes attach......works great and does not burn out!!:bows:
Good Luck!!:D

2 cats are worth $100. Then you get a free upgrade. Done.

That or... Cut the 2nd set out yourself then take it to a shop and have them weld in a piece of pipe.

finding the shop to do it is the issue, here in md they have really cracked down on scraping the cats, if a shop is caught cutting out cats, they are shut down, hefty fines($10,000) and jail time to the person who did it. if i cut them out myself, i could give them my cats once they weld it in....just gotta find that guy to do it

When I cut mine out, my friend attempted to weld in a new piece of pipe but his welding was acting up the whole time so I ended up taking to Tony's Custom Exhaust in Glen Burnie and had them finish up the welding. No questions were asked because it came into them without cats so they were fine with that.
When I had Greg "malibuguy" at MBS do my exhaust he knew the car came with 4 cats from factory but since I brought it to him with only two cats that's what he let leave with. If a vehicle comes in with X amount of cats it must leave with the same amount of cats that were on it when it came in. Whether they are stock or aftermarket ones which basically covers their arse. This is what Greg told me since I had my factory front cats removed and then replaced with two Magnaflow high-flow cats.

Get a job.
please allow me to explain myself before you make another ignorent comment on my situation
unemployment pays me $430 a week w/o taxes
gas to fill up belindas gas tank ~$65
$430+$65=$495
$495/40hours= $12.38 an hour
it would take atleast $12.38 per hour in a standard 40 hour work week for me to break even
there are no jobs right now in my trade as union sprinkler fitters to make my $30.48 im used to.
there are no jobs around here that will hire me at $15.00 an hour starting out pay.
im not working for anything less, because it would not even be worth my time....to wake up, go to work, come home and bring a check home for an extra $10-30 than what unemployment already pays me to sit home, on my butt, cherish the time i spend with my kid, do the honey-doo list, and whatever else i want on my free time. :puke:

You are allowed to make half that unemployment check per week at zero penalties, then it's a buck off for every buck made. At least it was that way a year ago?
