View Full Version : Bad Tranny symptoms?

I know that a few of you on here claimed that after installing you supercharger, your transmission was doomed shortly after. My question is; What were the symptoms of your tranny going bad? Were there "jerky" starts? Did it seem like your car wanted to stall under throttle? A lot of craziness started after i installed my headers and im trying to decide whether my cats are blown out and my exhaust is clogged, or if my tranny is going bye bye.

Bad Tranny symptoms?
Sex change gone horribly wrong???

Seriously, you would more likely get odd noises (that you may feel even), delays in shifting, high revs when it's in a gear and not moving up in speed, etc. How does you fluid smell and look?

im not supercharged, but my car was revving high and not shifting at the correct shift points.....on the highway i had like 4,000rpms, if i stomped on the gas it would shift around 5500.....but as soon as i let off, it went back the previous gear/4000rpms where i started. all of this happened within 4-5 miles

I did a pre-emptive strike and replaced mine and added a cooler and Circle D triple disc convertor, only 3k for peace of mind.......

I may be going FB 4STB soon. :D

Ok, Bill what's the 4STB, I don't get it. :)

Change the transfluid if you are worried about it. Also the O/D light can flash on the dash if there are trans problems. You don't want to see that...

When you do get the Eaton, add a trans cooler inline or just get a big one made by long. Heat kills transmissions and an Eaton, or even hotrodding it a lot can make it hot, 4.10 gears make the trans hot on the highway at 70+ Get a scangauge or something else to monitor transmission fluid temps.

I wasn't too clear on that! FB Performance built race trans: http://www.fbperformance.com/ViewTransmission/?TransmissionID=42
Muahahahaha! I'm thinking bracket racing. I've been looking at trailers too... :D

RacerX, did you use to post over on Crownvic.net? Congrats on the upgrade to a Marauder.

Cool!

I think you need a Gear Vendors setup! ;) 4.56 Gears become 3.55's with the flick of a switch. With a custom trans controller you could be banging 8 gears! (and of course do a detailed write up - so I can copy it) :D

What is the normal or safe operating temperature for the transmission?

I was told 180*

I think I posted twice over there in my 2 yr membership. :D I upgraded from a slightly modified 95 Ford Thunderchicken a few years ago.

+2 Chris from circle D also says you dont want to exceed 180* if so time for a better/bigger cooler

You hit the pedal and the car barely goes. Ask me how I know.

My 4.56 31 spline conversion parts should be here tomorrow, and hopefully I'll have stage 2, a Gear Vendors OD, complete before Carlisle

My temps be 190 to 198 sometimes. Does that mean I might need a better cooler?

What HP & TQ can the Gear Vendors OD handle ?

The product is ideally suited in stock form for cars with 1200hp or less and in this case is virtually indestructible, literally running for seasons of use without maintenance other than fluid. Cars with more than 1200+ horsepower can be accommodated but you should call the factory so hydraulic issues dealing with clutch ramp timing can be properly adjusted for your application weight and hp.

Got more than 1200 HP? :burnout:

It isn't so much that heat is bad for the transmission itself, although getting anything too hot is bad...the primary issue is overheating the fluid. According to Jerry Wroblewski, one of the original designers of the 4R70W and the "J" in J-mod, every 20° over 170° cuts the life of the fluid in half. Change the fluid on a regular basis, and you shouldn't have a problem.
