If you do it while you're driving you'll notice an increase in rpms. As long as you aren't going 90mph when you do it- You'll be fine.

You can turn the OD off and on at any time (within reason, as MIB said), but why would you want to turn it off on a trip? All that will do is reduce your gas mileage...

When you flick off the OD, you're essentially locking out access to 4th gear (the 'overdrive' gear, on this tranny). If you're below the speed at which you would have been in 4th gear, you probably won't feel a thing (I'm still wondering if there is any change in shift quality with OD button off versus OD button on, I wish someone could confirm this).
If you do it when the tranny is in 4th gear already, you'll order a downshift to 3rd. The difference between this and a regular 'press on the throttle' downshift is that the Throttle Position Sensor tells the PCM to order higher tranny pressures, whereas the OD-button-off type of downshift comes as a complete surprise to the tranny. I *thought* I read some quote from someone on here that later model 4R70Ws no longer suffer from ill effects of manual OD cancellation, perhaps they tweaked the PCM to sweeten the downshift somewhat?
Anyone remember the current recommendation by Jerry W regarding our 2003/2004 trannies?

Ok, i think i got it..thanks all. its just that i like to turn it off in bad weather<rain and snow>. i feel like the car pushes ya along in OD. instead of coasting when you let off the gas. i also like to turn it off when driving up in the mountains, and short trips around town, trying to give the tranny a break. think this is wise. or does it not even matter...

Nobody yell, I know I shouldn't have, I just couldn't help myself.
