Ok, so a friend of mine who used to be a mechanic tried replacing the power steering pump tonight. We ran into a snag - we seemed to have worked through it, but Im not convinced everything is correct.

The PS pump came with two o-rings - a white teflon one, that goes over the pressure line nut, and a smaller black one. We had no idea where that small black nut went, and it came with no indication. Pulling the line off the old pump, there was no indication that there was any o-ring in there either, but we werent paying attention and it could have fell out and we didnt notice.

My question is - where the HELL does this little black o-ring go? We ended up putting it on the end of the pressure hose, then putting it all into the PS pump. I just drove 40 miles home, and it SEEMS OK with no leaks and its operating fine, but I'm nervous we f'd something up.

Here is a picture of the pump from ford:

you can see the o-ring in the picture. WTH?

I have replaced 2 pumps in 3 weeks
I saw no need for the o ring

IIRC, you only use one, depending on the line style you have. There are 2 styles, each use a different seal.

ah, crap, that what I thought. but we figured why ship two if you dont need them.

So, do I need to go back in and remove the one in there, and obviously replace the teflon ring?

thanks

Replace the Teflon ring
It will leak otherwise

Right, that's my plan. So I need to get that little black rubber one out of the pump, because its only supposed to be used for certain hose assemblies, correct?

That would be my guess, I didn't see an o ring at all on mine
I would definitely get it out
