View Full Version : How to tell if I have stock gears.

Hi I just recently received my marauder as a gift from my wife and I don't know too much really anything about what was done to it before I had it. It sounds pretty good when I'm driving it so I don't know if it has aftermarket mufflers. Its not too loud but sounds pretty good. Also it moves pretty quick so I want to know how I can tell what type of gears are in it. My head snaps when I take off and I'm not even 25% into it. I don't know if it does this from factory but it drives very differently than my 99 cvpi. Any info would help thanks.

I would look at the mufflers and see if they appear stock for starters ,also look at diff. cover to see if it looks like its been removed since factory.

Put it on a lift and turn a wheel one revolution and count the number of time the driveshaft turns. Stock gear ratio is 3.55.

tdiff cover dosent mean nothing i bought my car and has the ford racing dif cover on it so i thought yeaaa buddy i have some 4.10 but only REAL way is to take the cover off and spin your wheels and shine a flash light in your diff and it will say on the gears 3.55

was a big dissapiotment when i did this and een well why in the hell did some1 put a aftermakwt cover on and have all sock gears :alone:

Here's how I would do it. Go out on the highway and cruise at 60 MPH Overdrive On;

If it cruises at 1800-1900 RPMs, you have 3.55 gears.

If it is at 2079-2194 RPMs (about 2,136 average say 2100), you have 4.10 gears (+15.49% difference from stock)

If it is at 2180-2301 RPMs (about 2,240 average say 2250), you have 4.30 gears (+21.13% difference from stock)

If it is at 2312-2440 RPMs (about 2,376 average say 2400), you have 4.56 gears (+28.45% difference from stock)

Pull the cover, spin the ring around till you see the part number s and what not on the outter edge of the ring gear. The last few numbers are the ratio...you have to divide them against each other to know the actual ratio...

the 41:11 is 41/11 or 3.73 ratio....

With 410 gears cruising at 80mph you should be at 2800 rpms

is your speedo off? unlikely, but if previous owner installed 4.10 without a tune, then your speedometer will be off. did ur MM come with a tune do you know?

Okay all you "go out on the highway and guess by the RPM's" people, tell him weather or not to have it in overdrive or not.

Hey next time you are in Va Beach, I'll look at it. We can do a few side by side runs.

I have not the slightest clue what was done to this car if anything at all. I sure would like to know so then I can do my own "go fast" mods

Here's how I would do it. Go out on the highway and cruise at 60 MPH;

If it cruises at 1100-1200 RPMs, you have 3.55 gears.

If it is at 1270-1386 RPMs (about 1,328 average say 1300), you have 4.10 gears (+15.49% difference from stock)

If it is at 1332-1454 RPMs (about 1,395 average say 1400), you have 4.30 gears (+21.13% difference from stock)

If it is at 1413-1541 RPMs (about 1,477 average say 1500), you have 4.56 gears (+28.45% difference from stock)

Never having a marauder before and no frame of reference. A couple of years ago I was down in SA cruising the 410 with my buddy, who has always had Corvettes. At the bottle neck at I-35 to go north I had to get around a couple of cars going south, anyway I was going about 45, hit the OD off and floored it. Didn't see see tach as I was watching what I was doing. He says, God what kind of gears you got in this? I told him stock 3.55.

Anyway, I read this post, remembered what he said, and went out yesterday on the highway.

OD on:

At 40...about 1200

60..around 1800

80..around 2400

I came back and check against these numbers and thought, Geez, there must be something wrong with my tach or speedo. Going to give it another try today. I too know nothing about this car prior to buying it.

You are probably right about the 1,800 RPM at 60 MPH. I was trying to do this from memory since the MM is parked since last week. I thought that the 1100-1200 might be low. I will adjust the original post. Somewhere just under 2,000 is probably closer to accurate. I used 1800-1900 as the mark on the wall. Now I got go out and check it too. ;) The good news is that the higher numbers give a better spread for readability on the tach. Under 2000 RPMs @ 60 MPH = 3.55. Over 2000 RPMs @ 60 MPH is 4.10 or taller.

To be able to drain fluid & refill easily (the way it should be equiped from factory but that's a different story!!! :mad2:).

Usually when searching I go 5 pages deep....this was on page 6..:D. Just typed Installing 410's. Don't forget about the tune when you get the 4.10's, you need one. Mo's or Lidio's it's your choice..IIRC, around 400.00 for the tunes.

Why would anyone cruise @ 60 MPH with OD off?

Just looked at mine, OD off, 60 mph, 2500 rpm's.

Exactly !!! Just had the chance to double check this on my own. My numbers are correct for the OD On condition.

@ 60 MPH (OD On) = 1800 RPMs with stock 3.55 gears
@ 60 MPH (OD Off) = 2500 RPMs with stock 3.55 gears

BTW --- Don't ever wait until 5:00 PM on a Saturday in Northern Virginia to try to get up to 60 MPH. I have been riding around for 20 minutes at 45-50 MPH waiting for some of these "shoppers" to get the hell out of the way. ;)

Over drive stays off until about 70-75, if even then, depends on what's beside me at the time.

Guess I'm resurrecting this thread.

Car was tuned. I wasn't aware that the rear end in this car was changed to a 4:10. It was tuned as a 3:55. RPM really high at 80, like 2700-2800, plus lurching when stomping it and shifting weird.

Found out about the rear end 2 nights ago...went into the tune and changed the axle data accordingly and now my Speedo is running low.

The question is using the SCT Tuner, can I make the adjustment to correct the speedo?

Not often, but I too have been known to cruise at 60mph on the highway with OD off....sounds great.....(no tune or gears yet but, they both will be coming soon)....more responsive at this speed....it mainly depends on what's next to me too. I had no idea this car would attract the kind of looks it gets while running around town. The Ford crowd in town is happy to see me. Local LEO's are scratching their heads and kids in Mustangs wanna run me. It's good to be a DTR!
