I'm in nc and I remember going by a couple shops last year asking about rear cats removal and they said they couldn't do it. Does anyone know of a place I can go? I'm at ft bragg fayetteville area.

Good luck finding a place that will do it,you need to know someone like a friend who works in a shop to get it done.I'm going to take mine to my nephews shop next week to see if he can weld in a straight pipe, can't wait to here how it sounds these cars are way too quiet from factory for my taste.
Check out your local muffler/exhaust shop and predominately displayed in the lobby should be a "sign" about keeping the emission control system on your car intact. It goes on to say that any shop that alters the emissions equipment on a car is subject to a huge fine.
Also cars that have the emissions system altered will not past an OBD2 test, however, North Carolina has an emission testing program by county and consists of a safety inspection and an OBD2 check.

Not true.
I have Mustang shorty headers, 2 hi-flo cats, X pipe, & Flowmasters. All connected with 2.5" mandrel bent SS pipe. My MM has passed N.C. inspection every year since the exhaust system was installed.

Fastblackmerc:
Are you in a county that has the OBD2 inspection? If so were their any "not ready" flags tripped? Maybe there is an exception that isn't shown on the NC website. Trying to reconcile your experience with NC Website.
Can you give more details? So this gentleman will not be surprised.
Thanks,
Pat

Thanks for the heads up but I'm not really worried about passing a nc emission test because my car isn't registered here anyways. Just looking to get a better sound out of it.

IIRC, as long as the cats have 50+K miles on them they can be replaced legally under federal law. I have two high flow cats, installed in one of the most communistic states in the union by a FOMOCO dealership.

If your looking for a really loud rumble then you should stick with flowmasters. When I had my 2000 crown vic, I had flowmasters super 40's with rear cat deletes and it sounded just like a chevy. ITs a nice rumble and pretty loud.

Removing the rear cats will not trip any CEL codes from the emissions system and a visual inspection can be passed as well since the car has two front cats, providing the tech not know the car came with 4 cats from factory.
If you can't find a shop that will take them off then all you really have to do is remove them yourself and take it into any exhaust shop and have them weld in a piece of pipe. As long as the exhaust shop is not altering the vehicle from the way it came in and letting it leave with less emissions control than it came in with. If it comes in with two cats they can let it leave with two cats, if it comes in with four cats then it has to leave with four cats.

You my friend are a genius I didn't think of that...I'll have to get the things together to do that. Will a jigsaw work just fine?

I only know because that's what I did. I had a friend remove them and after he did some taching of the new pipe pieces his welder took a dump. I took it to an exhaust shop I had used in the past said I had some transmission work done and they couldn't unbolt the exhaust piece to drop the trans cross member so they cut the exhaust pipe, put some pipe in there and told me to go get it welded up and bring them the receipt. The owner of the exhaust shop, said "fair enough", gave me the wink and said have a seat and we'll get to you in a few mins.
Now driving with cats off is going to be LOUD so if that is what you end up doing make sure you find some place close or if you have triple AAA get them to tow it.

Another advantage of these cars is the number of them on the road.
If you go to a shop (cutting them out yourself prior); most places won't question it because the number of Marauders they probably see, is so small that they won't know if you are supposed to have two rear cats or not ! Nothing to compare them too.

Number of cars and age. When I got my exhaust noise ticket, DOOM reminded me about how there really isn't much OEM parts left. I was going to tell the judge that parts of the exhaust were leaking bad and a lot needed to be replaced, since there were no OEM parts left and aftermarket pre-made stuff would need replacing again probably in a few years, I spent the extra money and had a quality exhaust system made up that will last for years and years.

I assume there is a mech shop on base, maybe see if one of the mechanics will saw off the cats for you.

Another interesting question/answer series here...I just took my DRT '04 to a shop in Dripping Springs (outside of Austin) earlier this week to ask about taking the 2nd cats off and perhaps because the guy that owns this exhaust shop is an old car nut and had one in the show in Buda, Texas in October...and saw mine in our local car show later than month...he said he would do the job for $100. All he was concerned about was whether taking them off would throw an engine code or such...when I assured him that would not happen...all was well.
I told him I would be back this month.

You will enjoy the increase little rumble it will make if you have a stock system.

I ordered a set of the 4" megs tips so I think I might wait until I get those and go in the shop with no tips or cats. I think that'll make it even better :) probably easier to get done then too
