I would suggest not flooring it anymore right now until you find out. Just saying it won't help it at all

Another Philly Marauder bites the dust! Seriously, what is it with you guys? You seem to have the worst luck with these cars.

Based on what you've described (the ticking, followed by the rough idle and barely stays running) I am inclined to believe a valve seat has failed on your #8 cylinder. In which case you've lost a rocker/lifter (probably not damaged) and bent a valve in the process.

This is what happened to me back in July. Car started ticking, then the next day it started running like crap. I had a mechanic do a compression test and came up with good compression on all cylinders except #8. Then they did a leakdown test and when they got to #8, poof, air coming out of the left exhaust pipe. That's a telltale sign of valve seat failure, which is somewhat common on these cars (especially higher mile cars that don't have a cooling mod done).

If you're still completely confused, let me make it very clear...before you can confirm that it needs a new engine you need to do a couple things.
1. Assess any check engine lights and see what the codes are telling you. It could be something as simple as a fuel pump, a sensor, whatever. By the way, when my valve seats failed and the rocker/lifter flopped outta place, I ended up getting a fuel pump driver module code (completely unrelated to the problem. Once I cleared that, I was able to move onward and determine it was a head issue.
2. Probably the most important thing - do a compression test and leakdown test. You will need to have a shop do this and I recommend taking it somewhere other than the shop who thinks you automatically need a new engine. Take it somewhere reputable that has never seen your car before. They'll have no preconceived notions of what is wrong with the car and not lead you to believe that it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Now, if your car fails the leakdown (i.e. no compression on #8 and air exiting the tailpipe) the car is fixable. You can check out how I fixed mine here: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=82117
Here is another thread about it, which helped me immensely: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=67104

It's just a matter of finding a shop willing to take on the repair, or you yourself doing it if you're mechanically able. It is not something for a novice to do. I consider myself 'sorta okay' working on cars and I had some panicky moments.

 JOCULARITY!

Seriously though, sounds like issue could be as described above in post #3.

Adam....what's this cooling mod you speak of? Are you referencing S/C cars or NA cars? Mine's almost at 100k (NA), so you've piqued my interest...

I don't mean to derail this thread talking about the cooling mod, because it won't fix the original poster's car at this point, but...

Adam....what's this cooling mod you speak of? Are you referencing S/C cars or NA cars? Mine's almost at 100k (NA), so you've piqued my interest... All Marauders.
There will be people who say you don't need it if you're N/A. "I've got 300k on mine and I'm N/A and I never did the cooling mod and I'm fine!" Sure, there are those cases out there, just like there are lottery winners out there. Odds of winning are way lower than odds of losing.

I'm sure you've heard the name Zack floating around here. He was banned, doesn't post here no mo' but he owns three Marauders and is always working on someone else's. In other words he knows his stuff. And here's a direct quote:

I've made a lot of money fixing heads due to no cooling mod installed.
Nuff said.
(Either year)If you wanna talk more cooling mod, you can PM me, or look at the links I've posted above. By the way I recommend the MuscleMerc 5/8" cooling mod (http://www.thechicagogarage.com/forum/marauder-tech/117121-my-5-8-cooling-mod.html) as it is the cheapest and highest flowing on market at this time.

Again, for the O/P -- compression and leakdown, read your codes, report back to us!!!

Yeah I'm actually not driving mine until I get the cooling mod done

Depending on your mileage and damage already done, a cooling mod might not save you. I wouldn't worry about it so much if it's running fine now; get it done at your convenience.

Speaking of things that make one check pricing on replacement engines, is it just me, or has the selection for the 4.6l, DOHC thinned-out in the last 9 months? I came upon this thread and thought, "hmm, I wonder how much $$$ the 4.6l DOHC "Aluminator" is running these days?". However, when I check the Ford and Ford Racing Parts sites, I don't see these crate motors anymore. Then I spent about 45 minutes on google with the same results. The closest one I found was a rebuilt engine on the Ford site. 'was really looking for a new "Aluminator" (seems like it was 385hp out of the crate---I had seen it on the Ford site before....???

Thanks

I think that Ford Racing only makes the Aluminator short blocks in low and high compression versions now - no long blocks anymore!
Will have to use the 5.0 Coyote crate motor w/new PCM!
