View Full Version : I'm glad the Marauder was a low-production car!

I went to the local Ford dealer (Tousley for those in the area) yesterday for an oil change before I put my DBP away for storage and my service advisor thought I had a Grand Marquis. It wasn't until a few technicians told him it was a Marauder did he realize what it was. I get that reaction from time to time.
Tousley Ford is one of the largest volume dealers in the state and I asked the service advisor how many Marauders they generally see and he told me mine and another black one and that was it! :D
I like the fact that our cars are so rare that most people don't know what they are or don't recognize them when they come across them.
For example, Chevy built over 60,000 Impala SS's between 94-96 and Mercury only built 11,052 Marauders in two years...so 1/6th of the amount! Everyone and their mom knows what an Impala SS looks like, but the Marauder is a much more elusive beast and I love that!

I was just stayed at the Best Western in White Bear Lake the last couple of days, and drove past Tousley a few of times, I could not believe how big it was, their parts depot is huge!
The rarity of these cars is what attracted me to them. I still only see about one a month, if that.

Tousley has been a staple in the Minnesota Ford market since 1956 when Herb Tousley opened up shop. They're one of the largest volume dealers in the state and their building is unforgettable....it looks like a giant barn, complete with windmill!

Not only does the Ford dealership computer list my car as a Grand Marquis, I also get this from the mechanics: "Did you put this engine in the car or did you have it done"
You have to see the look on their faces when I reply: "I only wrote out the check...Ford put the engine in"

All 2003 MMs come out listed as a Grand Marquis because it shared the M75 VIN identifier with the GM. The Marauder specific M79 VIN identifier did not come out until the 2004 MM model year. I used to have them write "MARAUDER" in big black letters across the top of the service order. They know my car now so it is not necessary.

I have an '04 and still the computer inserts Grand Marquis. And you are correct, I make them manually over-ride the car heading and type in Mercury Marauder. If the dealerships computer is only half as smart as my home unit, then it will learn from repeated changes and make them automatically when my name and the vin number pops up.

We occasionally get notices from Ford with the dealers name on it that offers deals on something (oil change, trade-in etc) and it lists Ms.D's 04 as a Marquis. :shake:
I think Ford forgot they built 03-04 Marauders.:alone:
I love the rarity of the marauder! :lovies2:
I hate that we can't get any replacement parts!!! :mad2: :banghead: :argh:

You are so right. Was at the dealers yesterday getting the state inspection. When done receptionist said it would be around front in a minute. After five minutes (good section on tv) went to her with a smile and said you called for the wrong car. She looked at the ticket and said it's a 04 Grand Marquis right. Told no it's a Marauder and had to spell it out for her and a little history.
The way she butchered the name was quite funny. She appoligized, but i told her not necessary, happens all the time. She had never seen or heard of one in the years she was there. Only two of us, that i know of come in, one south and me north.

Well not to dampen you ride on cloud 9 here but I am really getting tired of stuff like..
-When did Ford make these?
-Did you special order that?
-My friend has a white one?
-the classic one is............"Nice cop car", love what you done with it.
I don't hear such stuff as I NEVER use a stealer for service...
If I can't fix it myself(highly unlikely) I have friends who can...

Yep, so far the most common for me are
"is that a cop car?" (obviously)
"I like what you did to that" despite that it looks an all stock Marauder
:weird stare from an old fella or lady in a Grand Marquis, as though I took a car like theirs and butchered it:
Then again, I had a guy pace me yesterday in his work truck and give the thumbs up and "OK" hand signal many times, and occasionally someone does know what it is and dig it.

Bless those people who appreciate the marauder!

I love hearing stories about the Marauder and how most people don't know what it is......on Halloween during trick or treating, a boy about 9 or 10 years old comes to the door, trick or treat and I like your red Marauder he says... then goes on to tell me if I knew that they also came in blue and silver and black and have a DOHC 32 valve aluminum motor and on and on. Guess how many candy bars he left my house with? Nice to see a kid interested and knowledgeable about cars..........especially ours! :) :) :)

I was aligning the outside rear view mirrors on my MM after a trip through a drive through car wash. Really cute black woman, dressed in denim and vacuuming her car said "I like your Marauder". Should have got her number!
A Marauder IS a Grand Marquis, which is really just a fancy Crown Victoria LX Sport.

I've owned all the above. I'll tell you they really made this car stand out from the other panthers. Nothing gives the feeling that this car brings you. I'm loving every second of the one I bought. It gets confused looks from people all the time. And, people don't know if they should pass me on the expressway lol!!!
Gotta love it

the cop car part comes in your favor when on the highway so i dont ever get mad at someone for assuming haha its like telling traffic to get the .... out of the way. only in black do they move though. my silver looks like a GM so i dont blame people who are just misinformed. i do hate the people who ask if its my dads car. im only 20 driving a $20k car so i kind of expect it. the little kid should have a marauder the day hes able to drive. id start a collection for him !! haha i had more people recognize what my marauder was at a toyota dealership where i work more than at the ford dealer up the street. one guy at ford said the same as what you have been hearing "did you get that custom made", "how much did those wheels cost".. sadly i just lower my head and tell him to google it.
