View Full Version : radio just tunes static

Anybody else had this happen? It seems to be an intermittent problem with the FM radio. When it fails, I get nothing but static.

I would like to first narrow it down to the radio or antenna. Not sure how easy that will be to do without kludging an FM radio to the antenna coax for test purposes.

Our radios are known to fail in this exact way.

Head unit tuner is crap, it seams like 99% have puked (including mine - hence the new Kenwood).

Put on your stereo buying shoes! :D

Thanks for the info. It seemed unusual for electronics to fail, as they are usually reliable. But Marauder electronics are not always the best.

Any suggestions on a replacement that can play WMA lossless files (including 24-bit 96 KHz) from a USB stick or memory card? Keep the stock steering wheel controls? Has decent power to drive good speakers at sub-ear-splitting levels?

Yeh, my best guess when consulting with some radio guys (as in, used to work for Motorola kind of radio guys) was that the phase lock loop portion of the FM radio is prone to failure in these radios for some reason. I don't remember if we fully found the root of the problem here or not.

The problem isn't appearing on your AM band right?

Pretty much any modern head unit with a USB port will fit that bill. Also, double-din head units DO fit.

+1 on getting an aftermarket deck.

Stock one is a POS and I had the same issues.

IMHO it's better to replace it with something more up to date with all the bells and whistles.

IIRC......think it was mentioned before that some of the connections inside the stock deck go bad and have to be resoldered.

+1^^^^^^^
Just bought me a Pioneer 2DIN unit on sale and installed over the weekend, love it! All the bells and whistles, DVD, usb, ipod, pandora, satellite, etc. I also had no radio reception from the stocker, clear as a bell now!

When it fails, I get nothing but static. Are you sure it's actually broken? Most of today's music is just noise...

A couple of members have donated their stock headunits to me so I can try to fix the reception problem.

Any luck in fixing these stock units, Fastblackmerc, I kind of want to stick to the original look....Thanks!

Fastblackmerc, if you would like an extra factory cd/tape/rad, PM me your info and I'll give you the one from my MM, no use for it now.

Look for dried out electrolytic caps.

I know of a plug and play cd/casette radio available that can work with a Sirius kit. Let me know.

Actually the AM band puked on mine, FM was still working. :shake:
