View Full Version : new caretaker
My son owns a 2003 black Marauder. He is currently away at school. I am now its caretaker. It has been covered in the shop for about 3 years. He claims it has some value in the long run. Other than being a super fast car, he was told by someone at the dealership that it has the HP package, for whatever that's worth. I've been telling my wife that with about 8,000 black ones produced, it may be special, but it's far from a collector, in my mind. I say sell it...I'm losing that battle. Any thoughts?

I agree with Gordon .... just Drive It !!! :burnout:
Sitting unused and unmoved for 3 years is doing it no good at all unless it is being periodically exercised.
All Marauders came with the HP package. They were all sold as a high performance vehicle. There were very few options with the Marauder except for a 6-CD Changer, trunk organizer, heated seats and a moonroof option in 2004. In stock trim, I wouldn't consider the MM a "super fast" car. However, the possibiliities are numerous. How fast do you wanna be? 14s, 13s, 12s, 11s, 10s, ...... or lower. Info here can get you there.
If your son's sole intent is to keep the car in a glass jar for the next 25 years to make money off it .... I'd say sell it now. Predicting future value is a crapshoot.
BTW -- there are only about 4,000 Black MMs left from the original production and the numbers get smaller everyday. They are starting to hold their value and depreciation may be starting to level off in the past year or so.
Recommend your son start driving it when he gets home and maybe he'll get hooked like many of us. :D

Only 4,000? How many do you reckon the total surviving Marauder population to be?

The info below \/\/\/\/\/ is about 10 months old so decrease the numbers from there by about 5-6%. This is an ESTIMATE ONLY.
Less than 8,000 according to my estimates. Closer to 6,000 or so. We lost an estimated 644 Marauders in 2011 (-442 '03 MMs and -202 '04 MMs)
In the Year 2012 …..
Here’s my estimate of the number of 2003-2004 Mercury Marauders that are remaining as of the year 2012. Attrition to date is “just an estimate”.
Total MMs remaining – 5,792 (’03 MM – 3,980 and ’04 MM – 1,812)
’03 MM – 3,980
Black – 3,601
Silver – 212
Blue – 167
DTR - 0
’04 MM – 1,812
Black – 702
Silver – 557
Blue - 0
DTR – 553
Total ’03-‘04 MM – 5,792
Black – 4,303
Silver – 769
DTR -- 553
Blue – 167

Even more rare if you consider how many are in North Dakota. Probably less than 10 by now.
Here's an estimate of where the MMs went originally and as of November 2010.
THIS IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE BASED ON POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
Here's a little different view of the "By State" estimated distribution of Marauders. Black numbers = Original Distribution of 11,052 MMs. Red numbers = Current estimate of remaining MMs as of November 2010.
The original average works out to be 1 Marauder for every 29,522 people. :D Now the average is about 1 MM for every 49,784 people.
With the exception of California and Texas, the overwhelming majority are East of the Mississippi.
