I have been looking at the 2003 VIN numbers posted in the database(thanks a_d-a-m) and my VIN has an extra X

its 2MEHM75VX3X then the last 6 digits

most people have a 7 where the first X is but it seems to be a random digit(number)

anyone know why?

The first X is a check digit and as far as I knew they were only supposed to be 0-9.

"The check digit theoretically can be anything from 0 thru 9 and X (representing the number 10)."

Didn't you get the VIN Decoder sheet with your FPG certificate? Yes, it is the random "check digit".

Here's the VIN decoder that came with my certificate from the Ford Performance Group (FPG)

Example = 2MEHM75V03X0000

2ME = Ford Motor Company of Canada (i.e. 2=Canada, M= Mercury). If the 3rd digit is "H" it was an incomplete vehicle from the factory (i.e. it was shipped out for the moonroof install)

H= Active Safety belts (all positions), Driver and Passenger air bags plus passenger side air bags, curtains, or canopies.

M75 = Grand Marquis (MM shared this designation in 2003), M79 = Mercury Marauder (separate MM designation added in 2004)

V= 4.6L 302 HP DOHC V-8 Mercury Marauder only

0 (i.e. 9th digit is a check digit 0-9 or X)

3 = Model Year (3 is 2003, 4 is 2004)

X = St. Thomas Assembly Plant

000000 = Sequence Code

Darn, I was hoping this was a unicorn, some test car that got out or very early production car like CheesheadBobs (who has it now?) was.
