View Full Version : Overheated!!!!

I have a 2003 early build Marauder I believe (if that makes a difference). While outside with the car idling it overheated and the fluid drained out. My question is what are the possible causes and solutions and what major issues should I check for now.
The fan was running so I know it wasn't that. I cannot find the exact source of the drainage but will attempt to pressure check the system ASAP.
If I understand correctly, it could be the water pump stopped working, the thermostat, air in the system, or...
Can a radiator go bad or clog? The water pump was replaced 6 months ago and I haven't had an issue with the car running hot since?
I am sure the question has been addressed somewhere but it is hard to find old answers. I apologize if it has.If anyone can steer me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

So.. I have no idea where the fluid drained out? I checked all my hoses and refilled the system. Im going to let it cool and top it off then see what happens.
Looking under the car, there is coolant like fluid dripping towards the back of the engine where the engine and transmission connect?? Not sure where it is coming from?
I have no idea what caused the problem or if it will happen again or what to replace? I guess I will see if it gets hot again and start replacing parts.

Do you have heat? See if your passenger side floor is wet.

There is a cross over hose at the back near the firewall that runs through a silver woven heat shield at the top of the motor.

HMMMMMMMMMMM sounds bad, sell the engine and buy a new one, problem solvedl

Thank you for the responses. I will check tomorrow once it is daylight out. I refilled the system per the posted procedure on how to do it properly, then drove 30 miles on the highway to get home. The temp stayed steady on the gauge.
I will get into it tomorrow and really check things out. I will let it idle again for a while and try to duplicate the problem.

Ooooooooh, don't try to replicate it too often, modular motors don't respond too well to overheating...

Could it have ended up it the oil? I dont have a clue, maybe something internally broke and the coolant burned off in the engine leaving you with a smokey exaust?

Check the metal tubes leading to the heater core in the fire wall. You have one that goes from the back of the water pump under the intake and out the back then into a rubber hose that takes it the rest of the way to the heater core.
The other tube runs along side the passenger cylinder head low to the back as well and also turns into a rubber hose.
Might just be a loose clamp.
There is also freeze plugs to consider, and worse case a head gasket blew because of something else causing an overheat, but doubtful,

air in the system the jagoffs at the body shop opened my system and didn't bleed the air well enough and driving it would keep cool but soon as it sat and idled it would start climbing but now that you let pin the gauge it sounds like you broke either the radiator or the heater core

+ who replaced the water pump

I replaced the water pump following posting from the forum. I also followed the burp procedure to the letter when refilling. I think I will just replace the thermostst since its probably been in for 80k miles? Don't know if that's too long. If that doesn't resolve things then I'll replace the water pump again and see what happens.
As soon as I get a chance I'll check the hoses mentioned that run to the heater core. I drove the car home like 30 miles and it stayed where normal temp is. It may have all leaked out the refill cap once it got too hot, being as the main coolant covered area was around where the battery is.

Throwing parts at a car with no diagnosis in sight, hoping it'll fix it, is usually a pound foolish way of doing it...but it'll work in a pinch.
If you've done a proper burp and the coolant level is holding steady and your car isn't overheating, maybe you've fixed it...but where did all that coolant go in the first place? I kinda wonder if you keep driving it, if that coolant level is going to slowly keep dropping.
How often were you checking the coolant beforehand? Might have a hose with a pinhole leak that didn't manifest itself as a problem until your car was woefully low on coolant.

I'm confused now. First you said back of engine, then later said near the battery area?

there was coolant all over the battery area when it got so hot it started flowing out. Upon inspection, there was some fluid dripping near the trans an hr or so later. Maybe it was still dripping from the initial burst but im not sure how it would have ended up getting back to the trans

im going to change the radiator an thermo because its been a while. The properly burp the system and see what happens from there. If problem persist, I will upgrade the water pump and go from there. I have no idea what else to do.
My main concern was it being something major that would ruin my engine or something else that I was unaware of.

I'd change just the thermostat.
Burp the system properly.
Pressure test the system.

Mine overheated over the summer once. I ended up having a damn near 1/2" thick fur blanket neatly woven out of 10 years of cottonwood trees jammed into the fins between the condenser and the radiator. I had to remove the fan and tilt the radiator back to get a visual and be able to clean out from back to front with a hose.
Worth a looky.
